Title: Anyone here get a similar pop rush from Zedd as they do from Max?
Post by: RoyFan on January 14, 2015, 09:08:56 PM

I think Zedd is on par with some of the great stuff Max has done recently.  Even though it's more aggressively synthesized music, I get a similar awesome rush
from his music as I do from Max's strong stuff.

How do other people feel about Zedd?  On Max's level?

I have a hunch they'll continue to collaborate since Zedd is awesome with tracks, and Max is obviously a master top liner.  If "break free" is an indication, there might be some great stuff ahead

I don't agree.

I just hope that this trend of over-plastic sounding tracks is over soon...

I like Zedd. He's a very current producer (and obviously a great EDM producer as well) and is well-deserving of his success. On Max's level? You mean as a producer? Zedd is not a writer. As far as being a producer, his two biggest hits in terms of chart success (Beauty and a Beat + Break Free) were written and co-produced by Max.

So glad someone else sees the beauty in his music Melody! :-)    I meant the OVERALL finished songs by Zedd, if they affect you as profoundly of some of Max's masterpieces.

And on Zedd being a writer, I think it's a matter of semantics.  I don't consider writing Just the top line melody and words.  The chord progressions are crucial, just like
when Luke and Max write and Max does the topline like the chorus of "SUBG" and countless other awesome melodies, you still need the chords underneath and they also contribute.

And Zedd does the chords to all of his songs.. and they're quite masterful like in "Clarity"  and "Stay The Night".

He is a co-writer: I think he works in the topline and works music and melody with his writing partner.

I think he's talented, the thing is that I don't enjoy his productions.
His songs just piano+voice sounds really good.

Interesting J - Any specific cases or interviews you know? I know "Clarity" and "Spectrum" top line were all Mathew Komma.  "Find You" was Komma and Miriam Bryant.
I know that Zedd sometimes edits toplines together, and changes chords after the top line is done.

I'm pretty sure has topliners write to his tracks, mainly. He might edit things here and there but I've never heard that he actually writes stuff. Props to him if he does!

As for chords being part of writing, absolutely true. I was referring to melody and lyrics though.

I'm not a big fan of Zedd but I appreciate the talent. He's very musical for shure. What could be a problem for him in the future is that he has a certain style which  makes his tracks similar to each other.

Really good track, this one.

Kinda,   there are certain elements that repeat.  He uses that techno uplifter to death  But his chord progressions are actually quite varied from song to song, probably more so than Luke's, at least Luke's well known songs. And the overall sound "paintings" he does also differ quite  a bit,
"Stay The Night" "Clarity" , "Spectrum" and "Find You"  are definitely unique imho.

Well, every song comes from a different place: everyone that makes music knows it.

You always have an idea to develop and if you're a musical person, you always come up with a melody idea for the chorus and/or verse.
I don't think he just make a track for someone to write...

I don't know about EVERY song he's ever done.  But I've heard him say "Matthew Komma and Miriam Bryant are my  GO TOs whenever I need a great top line" - But I do know for sure
that with "Find You" he edited their parts after they sang.  And I know again that he edited the track of "Clarity" AFTER Matthew Komma wrote the topline.

So the songs that I love by him I know other people did the top line.  Again in "Stay The Night", his original piano part "picks out" individual notes so in that sense he contributed much more to that topline cause the co writer incorporated those notes into the melody.

Yea he's really great.  I think "Clarity" is timeless.  A lot of people describe "Teenage Dream" (the song) that way.  Even though I'm a huge Max/Luke fan I prefer "Clarity" to
"Teenage"  as far as a classic for the ages.

I don't quite know to explain why this re-surgence in great music is happening now.  But we should all enjoy it, because once upon a time I was a kid in the 80's hearing classic
after classic being made right before my eyes and I took it for granted.  I never thought it will all end and we'd be in the dark ages with "Limp Bizkit" 20 years later.

Thank god for whatever has gotten us back on course and hopefully it's here to stay this time.

Here are my thoughts. Zedd has created an incredibly unique sonic signature for himself in the pop/edm world. It's an aggressive sound, but it's also very palatable in a radio/pop sense. His productions are significantly more musical than his contemporaries and that's what sets him apart from the rest. Interscope and Jimmy Iovine have groomed him as a pop producer because he comes across so much better when his talent as a writer (instead of just an EDM producer) comes through, and he is a writer, make no mistake. The guy is a clasically trained pianist who creates chord progressions that are nothing short of magical. He has a way with chords that makes my soul come out of my chest.

He doesn't write his own top lines, because chords are definitely his thing. I think Max uses him as a proxy because of his unique sound, in the same way Dr. Luke uses Cirkut as a proxy for his ability as an electro/pop producer.

Personally, I think Anton (Zedd) is on the brink of a long career. Think about how young he is? Sure his sound is very topical, but if you listen to his songs done acoustically, they are still distinctively Zedd, in the same way any of us can spot a Max or a Luke song. Having that musical identity is crucial to longevity in this industry. I think if he doesn't let his sound stagnate in this very transient electro trend, he'll have a very long career ahead of him and he'll only get better.

Just as Max is very lucky to work with great producers (Luke, Shellback, Zedd), I view guys like Zedd and Luke to be very lucky to work with great writers. It's rare, but when you combine a world class producer with a world class writer (and throw a superstar artist in the mix), you're going to have greatness. Zedd is very lucky to work with amazing writers (Tedder toplined his latest one with Selena) but he is also a very, very talented guy in his own right.

Nailed it. It's a team effort. It's very rare to see these kind of mega hits come from one writer or one producer. I think that's the key to Max's success, he delegates to fill his weaknesses. As does Zedd.

He sure does!  I so agree that that (even more than how beautifully he produces the track with those chords)  is his greatest asset.  Listen to the beginning of piano of "Find You".
Pure piano and vocals, and you still get the goosebumps.  The "Clarity" chords are obviously heart melting as well.

The only way that he might not be as consistently great going forward is the old thing where an artist has his whole "lifetime" to make his first record.  So much time to
create great ideas.  And then after that, you have a shorter time span to write.  His latest song with Selena didn't "hit me" as much as the stuff from the past 2 years. But he's good to just
disappear.

I like Zedd's productions, but I feel they lack detailed background vocals. His newest hit "I Want You to Know", is a good song, but it sounds like he took the easy way out and just layered Selena's vocals instead of having studio singers do the backing vocals.

I don't know that that sound is really relevant to 2015 electro-pop. Most of the big tracks on the radio right now are just center, left and right doubles and harmonies.

Maybe for the same reason why Julia Michaels spent years in the shadows before becoming an established singer.

What is the reason?
In my opinion (and there's a lot of speculation since I don't know Sarah that much), she looks like Julia in the way of making writing their first priority, when she (Julia) was interviewed with Ross Golan last year in And The Writer Is... she told that in the beginning the label was responsible for putting her in the writing scene and years gone by until (I don't remember if it was her or the label) she began singing for herself with those features.
Sarah looks like a she's having a lot of ideas all over the place (considering the artists she wrote for) and maybe sooner or later she'll find something that fits for her image (if she creates one for herself) and that's when we'll see her singing her songs. In the meantime I can see she looked confident with the decision of not making herself the singer of this song, maybe she's the reason why.

EDIT: she even has a private Instagram account, just to point out.

The song was recorded by Demi Lovato, Camila Cabello, Anne-Marie, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo, Bishop Briggs, Bebe Rexha, Lauren Jauregui, Daya and Elle King until Maren Moris was chosen for final version.

The Grey guys did a video about their input on the song.

These guys are great at sound design.

This is one of the most interesting things I've seen in so much time. I wonder if everything they showed are bits they did alone or with Zedd.

Good news.

2:50 — How to work with Max, you both are producers? (https://itunes.apple.com/us/post/sa.7768e7b0-8aa9-11e8-b53e-2cf3282fc8ef?app=music&ign-itsct=be1_con_zan&ign-itscg=10703)
Quote— I just wanted to play it for him because I had a meeting with him and [? I wasn't certain] that everything is working on and I wasn't 100 % in love with it. But I thought it is a good point to start.
So I played an instrumental and he said I love this, I would love to write to it, don't show me the vocal version.
He went to Sweden and wrote something new. With a little bit of distance I got to [re-due]  both versions and I probably going with Max and I try to finalize it and tune a little bit.

Elley sounds identical to Maren Morris.  Probably she also just copies Sarah Aarons' demo.

I like the song a lot.
Sarah Aarons looks like Zedd's go to songwriter. Always teaming up with Noonie Bao and Linus Wiklund.

Talks about Beauty and a Beat: he made the track, Max wrote the topline, Savan the lyrics.
Same with Break Free.

Written by Zedd, Katy Perry, Caroline Ailin, Corey Sanders, Daniel Davidsen, Peter Wallevik & Mich Hansen
Produced by Zedd, Peter Wallevik, Daniel Davidsen and Cutfather.

It grew on me. I love the chorus but I don't like the production at all.

It makes sense: he doesn't write on his releases and GREY do what they call the "tweaking".

BTW, their new single is out and sounds just like Zedd.

What's his role in his music now and how he did get into this position of not producing music?

Is it because he lost hearing in left year several years ago?

OMG, Koma marries Hilary Duff.

Matthew was very harsh pointing his lack of talent, which may be true, I perceive him more or less like David Guetta, just a facade.

Matthew was Carly Rae Jepsen boyfriend back in the day.
And probably Zedd did great a couple years ago, really involved in his music... but he is doing MANY "shows" and there's no time for writing/producing.

Here?

QuoteWhich seemed so absurd, because his contributions were so wonderful and he was a very talented producer back when he was involved in his productions.

I'm referring to the part where Matthew kinda accused him of being a poor piano player for not being able to play beyond the C key, which as a musician it's really funny, it's the most basic stuff.

He's basically a name: he gets stuff, do some thing here and there, features not really established singers and see what happens.
