Title: Recreating Oops I Did It Again Instrumental
Post by: Tano87 on August 21, 2020, 01:52:10 PM
Hey guys since I have obsession for Oops I Did It Again I'm planning to make a cover BUT first I wanted to recreate the main element sounds so that they can stay on my cover.
Obviously the key is different...but let me know if this would sound legit.

The chorus sounds way too thin and dry.
Other than that it seems you're on the right way!

Yep I should have give more volume but I heard them louder on my headphones.
Obviously there's no mastering or mixing or anything like that.

First of all, you did very well. Good sound selection, it sounds very similar. Here are some tips:

-You are missing the solina strings in the chorus. I know there are strings in your chorus and they might be high cut solina strings. In that case open up the filter. Also try out panning one solina hard left and the other right and have some delay between them. this makes the mix much wider. I think the chorus will become much bigger if you widen that solina thing, especially since there are no vocals there, the extra width would be useful.
-The fade in effect that leads towards the chorus is too dry. It needs more reverb.
-The pre of the original does not have that formant "wow" sound.
-Drums: if i'm not mistaken I hear that you use an airy sample which functions as percussion or hat or whatever. In the original mix there are two sounds, one panned roughly 30% left and the other right. The left one sounds darker and has a slightly different pattern, and the right one sounds bright.
-Bass: the original slides downward(?) at the end of the pre.
-Guitar: the original has a guitar in the pre. Not sure, but might be an acoustic playing muted strings.
-Hit: the first hit when the chorus starts can have many layers. You can place almost anything there and in the end it is only felt, not heard. Place many things there, effects, piano's, guitars, don't be afraid to hard EQ individual layers. Just give it many layers and watch your limiter works when that hit comes in. It has to kind of fill up your frequency analyser dramatically. Then just back it off to give space for the vocals to cut through.
-Hit pre: add a crash.

Actually I was looking for the stems/multitracks to get some elements but people is not gonne get them out privately.
They're scared for them to leak or something.

SO...I was planning to make my cover recreating the whole thing but actually I totally changed the project with something more "original".
To recreate the thing requires a better computer and a lot of mixing, equing, mastering skills.

The new thing is actually ready. I just need to re-record vocals.

I also worked very hard to get the real background vocals notes...it's a mess.

Hope the thing will see the light pretty soon.

It was supposed to be out in May for the 20 anniversary...  :-[ :-[

Sorry I changed nickname...and the link was broken. I've fixed it.
Also I made this dark version (it includes my vocals but ignore them)...

I've lost the project because of my computer mother board  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I recovered the equipment list and listed in this forum. No plug-ins are mentioned also because I doubt they were available back then.

They only noted the company names of the plugins they were using, such as Waves, Antares, Synchro Arts. I'm certain that the Linplug Rmv Drum was not used. The romplers they had in the 90's are full with samples of real drum machines and they sound phat and have very good character.

Oh fun fact, EMU Mo phat and planet phat (purple devices) spotted on this video: https://youtu.be/ncEgxQqB1FA?t=33

If I'm not mistaken, the Stronger remake vocal audio print is more than just vocals. Sometimes there are no vocals but the stem shows there is (loud) audio, so I don't know who is fooling who? What is going on in that video?

I think he just filtered the album version somehow and created the song with its instruments
