Hello,

Does anyone know what synths were used for the acoustic guitars on BSB (Quit Playing Games, As Long As You Love Me) and Britney (Sometimes) - or were they real guitars?

Really appreciate if anyone can help.
Thank you  :)

Do you know if they used any acoustic guitar patches at all?

They had a go-to guy named Esbjörn Öhrwall who played guitar on a lot of the hits back in the day. I'm torn about "Don't go knocking on my door" though. Might be a patch from whatever synth. Roland maybe. But can just as well be note for note chopping of a recording.

Yep, real acoustic guitars from Esbjörn.
And around that time, a guitar sounding patch was pretty common. It became the signature sound by producer Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs -TLC's No Scrubs, some Destiny's Child songs and pretty much every R&B hit around 1999- and every R&B producer used the same sound all over their songs.

Born To Make You Happy (Bonus Remix) is my favourite arrangement around that time, by Esbjörn.
The curious thing is that this version was the first one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm7baJKN_cw

Always and forever you and me, that's the way our lives should be, yeah, I was born to make you happy.

I doubt that was the real BTMYH version.
The sound was too strong for the debut album.
Probably the structure was the same but it totally sounds like a remix, re-worked to be more 2000/Cheronish, like what happened with (You Drive Me) Crazy.

It sounds like real guitars on "QPG". You can even hear the guitar slides and the mute strumming between chord changes.

On "Sometimes" it sounds like a single note guitar sample that's being played in the verse and it changes to real guitars in the chorus.

"As longs as you love me" I believe it's also real guitars.

It's funny how the guitar is mixed very much the same way in all the songs you mention. It's sort of subtle in the mix just to glue everything together. Love it  ;D
