Well I don´t like this song very much.. but i can totally understand what you mean.. But where has the counter melody gone? I think It´s just the hook melody of the song that is left.. maybe the guitar but... hmm I am not sure

These days the production like the voice pitch and sampling became more important then a counter melody like in "I want it that way" the guitar..

Maybe thats the reason why Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco became so important for Max Martin...
