how does one begin the process of achieving a publishing deal?  are lots of people trying to get one? is it competitive?

hmm...

You just send stuff to the right people and work really hard at being the best. It helps to go to Hollywood and meet people in the industry.  And a lot of people are trying to get publishing deals, but just as many are trying to do their own thing on the independent platform. It really depends on what you want to accomplish in music. It is competitive, but you just gotta focus on being really good.

If you're really at the top of your game, it's not as hard to get inside.
