QuoteSwift hopes to collaborate with new songwriters and producers. But she planned to begin, she said, by heading back into the studio with Max Martin and Shellback. "I want to go in with Max and Johan first, just to figure out what the bone structure of this record is going to be.

Taylor Swift is the 8th World's Highest-Paid Musician of 2013!
According to Forbes, Taylor Swift is among the World's Highest-Paid Musicians of this year. She's at the 8th position.
No. 8: Taylor Swift ($55 million)
Swift released her fourth studio album, Red, in October 2012 and sold 1.2 million copies in week one. The album's first single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," became her first to top Billboard's Hot 100 chart. She parlayed that success into endorsement deals with Diet Coke, Sony and Covergirl, not to mention big bucks on the road.
How can she not. The man has given her two of the biggest hits in her entire career, he actually put her on the map in Europe, I mean come on you know you're "pop" Taylor not "country", so knock the I don't know the "bone structure" bull gurl and let Max do his job!

nznexus, have you ever seen her live? P.S. Your avatar is awesome. I can't wait for Dec. 10!
It seems like everyone who goes to work with Max and writes with him, leaves and becomes a better songwriter as well. Since she's already one of the best, I'm super excited for this new album. Though, I do also love her "country" stuff so I really hope she still works with Chapman...

Max, Martin & Shellback?
I know I'm a HUGE Max Martin fan, and this makes me VERY happy to hear, but I hope she keeps at least some songs produced by Chapman on her next album. Taylor is an incredibly talented songwriter and her non-Max music is extremely emotional. Songs like Enchanted, All Too Well, Begin Again are phenomenal, even if they aren't mega pop hits. I love the two of them dearly but I wouldn't want to see an entire Max/Taylor album.
My fellow swiftie, nznexus, what do you think?
she needs to work more with other producers like chapman from nashville. but i wouldnt mind if she made an entire album with max martin

I'm pretty sure this will sound like I'm a smartass, but all the songs you mentioned were written by herself, no cowriting credits.
Taylor doesn't work with too many co-writers, with exceptión of guest features and producers: the only habitual cowriter is Liz Rose.

the fifth album on october
So there's been a lot of speculation about Taylor's next album.
1. There's a theory that roses will have something to do with the album with all of the pictures that Taylor has put on Instagram. After Red came out we realized she was giving us hints all along ;)
2. There's a report that it could come out in October (someone reported that Scott said that, but there has been no confirmation.)
3. Just recently, Brian Mansfield tweeted, "Overheard today, from someone who has listened to new @taylorswift13 music: 'It's like the other albums were practice for this one' "
This is all so exciting!!!! If all of her other albums have been "practice" I'm not sure I'm emotionally ready for album five haha

Recent Rolling Stone interview with Scott Borchetta:
"But he did urge her to collaborate with Max Martin on her last album. Martin worked "on most of" her next one, which means it could be her poppiest work to date. "Taylor fans are going to love it," Borchetta says. "Will country stations play a complete pop song just because it's her? No. But when she comes to town, her friends at country radio will come and see her".
Looks like Max worked on "most" of the Taylor album. I'm predicting 6-7-8 songs on the album.

I can't wait for these new Max songs! :P
think it's hard to predict if the next album will be country or pop.
Ed Sheeran told MTV that Taylor wrote all of the album herself.
Also,Taylor said in her speech at the 2013 AMAs:
"I wanna thank country radio, and also pop radio because the fact that those different genres of music played songs off of my album, makes me not have to think about genre when I'm writing songs,it just allows me to think about writing songs."

Interesting article.
The lack of exclusivity that mainstream music has nowadays truly hinders the business in my opinion. I can listen to my favourite current song 20 times per day and get sick of it in a week or less.
Back in the day, I'd be excited when my favourite song played on TV or in the radio, because I didn't get to choose when I'd listen to it, unless of course I bought a physical copy of the record.
The experience of listening to a record has dramatically changed.
That's why the alternative side of things is way more interesting nowadays.

the drums sounds awesome. Organic!
EDIT: and daaaaamn that tracklist is looking good! it's only the writers though I assume, so I don't know but I guess shellback is also producing track 5. Who is ALi Payami?
Must be another new guy Max is working with. He's credited on "Love Me Harder" by Ariana Grande.
I love this song SOOOOO MUCH. Max/Shellback/Swift is the dream team.
It's infectious. It's definitely not classic Max/Shellback melodic brilliance, but the whole package is so full of personality, it's irresistible.
yayayayayayayayayayayayaaaaaaaaaa love this!!!!!! and the "happy" copy is not that obvious, i've been trying to figure out how they can make plagiarism so subtle. The album list makes me even more euforic yaya ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

it's a cute! nothing amazing or too melodic. one of those infectious catchy songs you can dance to... and she said it in the live stream and it's true: they wanted to create a sound both Taylor and Max hadn't done before. strong live-sounding dreams, the horns, the layered reversed vocals. the vocal production is especially more "free" - less glossy and perfectly Melodyned. sounds nothing like any other Max/Shellback productions. almost reminds me a bit of a Sara Bareilles production.
can definitely catch that late 80s influence she mentioned.
the chant during the bridge reminds me so much of Avril, which makes me think this kinda music would sound good with Avril's voice over it... she's gotta get back with Max.

And Max is really on pitch!!
http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2014/08/19/shake/ Yup.........really a shame, because with the masterpiece that was (is) ''Quitter'', Max/Shellback showed what they could do with bringing something new to country music, but guess Carly Rae Swiftson wasn't interested in that, so can't blame them...........

"Really love the song" makes you think that I don't like it?
But I keep cruiiising
Taylor Swift may not be a pop artist forever, or even for very long; perhaps later in her career, she'll return to country music with open arms. I wouldn't be shocked if she made an acoustic album someday. However, this is where she is right now -- holding oversized boom boxes in gaudy music videos, jiving with Max Martin in the studio, flipping off the naysayers who don't think she can make spectacular pop music. She can, and she will. The rest of us will just have to get used to it.

Those sort of "mat-looking" absorbers around the mic-area and the ceiling has me guessing it's Conway.
It went well for Shania Twain, why not for Taylor?
I think yes. And for Jewel it also went quite ok?

It happened unconsiously. Yesterday evening I couldn't even hum the melody and this morning I out of the blue had the melody in my head without listening to the song. And it has not stopped since then. I gave in and now I listen to it again. My body yearns for it.

To the experts: How long does it take to make a instrumental like this?
Top producers like Max and Shellback should take it 1-2 days to create the original instrumental. I can't listen to the karaoke version but if that's really an "industry", then they should get it ready in 1-2 days too, especially as they probably don't use real instruments.
Probably a pretty accurate answer. 1-2 days to get it to its "pretty much finnished" form. Then again, Max, more than any other is known to be an extreme perfectionist, so it's probably not uncommon for him to spend a couple of extra days just finely adjusting kickdrum sounds and things. Though the vocals is the part that is the most time consuming I'd say.
It depends on so much though.
Do you start the song with the production? --> are you writing the song while/after producing it?
Is the songwriting done before the production?
Do you already know which instuments you'd like to use?
How many real instuments are you using?
And I'm sure that they ALWAYS add extra elements to the production once the vocals are recorded.
Damn , it's a drug , I can't stop listening it.

Max has always used that kind of tricks - changing words for others with a similar pronunciation. Like, "we called it off again last night " and "you called me up again tonight" in wanegbt.

BTW, some interesting facts about this exciting list:
- 7 years in a row he has had at least a number one hit.
- 3 is the maximum of number ones in a year: 2010, 2011, 2012.
- Most profitable artist to work with: Katy Perry, 8 number ones.
- Nsync and Maroon 5 are the only full male acts who achieved number ones with Max.
- Girlbands or solo male artists still mean no number one for Max (Go for it Max!)
I always think Katy Perry must be a dream cowriting partner, as well as Taylor.
Congratulations Max , Taylor and Shellback!! , Well deserved! , 18th Number 1!! , Amazing , The best pop songwriter ever.
I don't value Katy as a co-writer at all... All she contributes are lyrics and most of them are embarrassing and are the worst part of the song. Like "Ghost" is an amazing melody but with lyrics like 'And there's just a pillow where your head used to sleep'. And "Roar" is nothing but songwriting cliche after songwriting cliche (eye of the tiger/bite my tongue/hold my breath/rock the boat/stinging like a bee/floating like a butterfly/zero to hero).
Whereas with Taylor, you hear her influence in the songwriting, and she has plenty of solo-writing credentials in the past to let you know she's the real deal. For instance, she wrote the amazing chorus to "I Knew You Were Trouble" before bringing the song to Max/Shellback.

how do you know Katy wrote those specific lyrics?
Quote from: melodicmoonlight on August 29, 2014, 05:26:10 AM
how do you know Katy wrote those specific lyrics?
Well Katy's job in the songwriting process, usually along with Bonnie McKee, is to write the lyrics. And they're usually quite dull and colourless. Sometimes this works, because the lyrics are just a vessell for the incredible melodies, but sometimes they're so cringeworthy that they actively get in the way of the song.
Well, I'm not sure about it.
I think her input is more than just that: she's a great topliner, lyricist and songwriter.
She had some pretty good songs written by her own, but the songwriting terms in the industry are different: people write over tracks because it's way easier to have a hit like that.
All the songs are written from different places, everyone that works making music knows that: from a melody, from a lyrics, from a chorus or an idea of something, etc.
Then the collaborators help to polish the songs and make contributions in favor to get a better product.
You can tell about Katy and Taylor for example, that they are involved in the songwriting, because it seems honest and connected with their material. I don't know how to explain it, you just can tell.
Hopefully, someday we'll get the change to know more about her process and her songs.

Taylor disses a popstar in the track Bad Blood. Any guesses who this can be?
My guesses are Katy or Miley. I heard somewhere that Katy "stole" three of Taylors dancers in the middle of the Red Tour and that kind of makes sense if you read what T says in the Rolling Stone article.
haha, she always creates a buzz around her songs writing about exes and now she starts a feud with another famous pop singer. Actually a kinda smart move to get more attention.
I wonder if it's produced by our favorites... ;D
Would be weird if Max co-wrote/produced a Katy diss track for obvious reasons. I doubt he's involved in it.
QuoteThe Swedish pop giant, with help from his protege Shellback, produced almost half the songs on 1989, and is also, along with Swift, the executive producer of the album as a whole. Swift has worked with him before, on 2012's Red, but he plays a much bigger role this time around. "I used to talk about Max Martin like he was this sorcerer who lived in a castle on a hill," says Swift. "And then one time Scott [Borchetta, the head of her label] said to me, 'You know...you can work with him if you want to.' I was like, What?!"

Yup, typical Max melody all day long!
"Out Of The Woods" is ridiculously good.
Remember when you hit the brakes too soon
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying
Baby, I did too
But when the sun came up
I was looking at you
Remember when we couldn't take the heat
I walked out, I said "I'm setting you free"
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up
You were looking at me.
Wow.
And it's not even one of the 9 Max/Shellback songs. This will be the best album ever.
This is interesting:
"Out of the Woods" is written by Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff. It lasts for about three minutes and fifty five seconds. It is the first song that Taylor Swift has written to an existing track. Antonoff sent an early version of the song without the vocals or lyrics to Swift, which she then added in just 30 minutes. Speculation as to which man the song about is rampant. The bridge section of the song references the snowmobile incident that Swift and her former boyfriend, One Direction's Harry Styles, were reported to be involved in.
Featuring heavy synths and percussion, Antonoff described that the song is given an arrangement that combines both 80s and modern elements. A Yamaha DX7 is used for the 80s-tinged sounds apparent on most parts of the song, but they are countered with the Minimoog Voyager during the chorus sections, in which he explained, "That sounds extremely modern to me. It's that back-and-forth."
The song features layered vocals by Swift over drums and synthesizers. Antonoff also provided backing vocals. He said, "I just chopped this piece of my voice singing and started looping it over and over. Then I started banging on some drums I had in the room and stomping on the floor and sampling all these sounds to make this big bombastic looping beat with the sample on top of it."

QuoteTaylor Swift, seven-time GRAMMY Award winner and Billboard Magazine's recently named Woman of the Year (the only artist to have been awarded this honor twice), will exclusively unlock "Welcome To New York" on iTunes on Tuesday, October 21st, giving her fans a new track and a peek at what is to come from the most highly anticipated album this year, 1989 (Big Machine Records). "Welcome To New York" is written by Taylor Swift and Ryan Tedder (One Republic) and produced by Ryan Tedder, Noel Zancanella and Taylor Swift. This is the third song revealed from 1989, Taylor's forthcoming fifth studio album, while the current single, "Shake It Off," remains atop the charts across the globe.

The album leaked and it is, on 1st listen, absolutely unbelievable.
Like, everything I could ever want.
These melodies are ridic.
Album is incredible !!!!!!!!!!
and that Max Martin voice memo omg
New Romance is my early favorite. Love the sound design and the chords. Lots of amazing reverb in this album, sounds big.

i'm waiting til monday too. have never bought a t.swift album but this time it's gonna be worth it for an album this caliber.
would be interesting to hear the voice memos first, then be blown away by the final version.
I'd say my top choices for this album are:
1. Bad Blood
2. SIO
3. Blank Slate
not feeling the rest of the record entirely, but I'm sure that'll change with more plays.
I'm looking for the tracklist (and the DVD content) of the Japanese version, but couldn't find anything so far?
Anyone? :-[

I'm trying SO hard to wait till Monday! The suspense is killing me. My two favorite things in music are Taylor Swift and Max Martin, so Monday can't come quick enough.
The 0:30 snippet of Style from the Target commercial is intoxicating!
I made a quick first listen of the album, started hearing the voice memos.
Such a great idea to incluse these ones.
I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan -love her songwriting- but I'm not really feeling the production: sounds a bit dated at times and after hearing the voice memos, seems to me like the songs are lost in the production.
Melody-wise, is excellent.
I'm so excited.

I hear a lot of end of 90s-early 00s pop rock references in it.

I think some of it sounds dated definitely, but they balance it with creative and organic sounds. That's what I kinda liked from the beginning. I hear some nice sample manipulation sound design.
"Style" and "Wildest Dreams" are so hypnotising. Unbelievably addictive. The vocals, the production, the melodies... Bliss.
To me, the standout tracks are Blank Space -though I don't like the production at all-, Style -to me, that chorus doesn't carry the rest of the song-, Wonderland produced by Greg Kurstin, New Romance.
My favourite by far is All You Had To Do Was Stay: it's just perfect.

Yeah, might just be the strongest chorus on the album. It kinda gives me that cheiron vibe.
The most classic Max melody for me is "we found wonderland / you and I got lost in it / and we pretended it could last forever".
The album is out.

big day for max and shellback fans!!! Just bought it but haven't listened yet, stuck in school. But damn Max has been working out!! haha
Judging an album by snippets is never a good idea.
I got surprised when i saw those two max and shellbacks photos in the booklet
OK, first listen, and here are my thoughts. I will start with the three songs released first: SIO, OFTW and WTNY. Shake It Off is already one of my all time MXM faves (until I heard the rest of the album). I honestly am not grabbed by WTNY and OFTW. Good songs, but lack the "magic" element for me melodically. Now on to the rest of the album. Well, how should I put this, for a fan of pure pop perfection, I was in heaven. It absolutely blew me away. This is MXM and Shellback on top of their game, hitting their peak. If they get better than this melodically, then they are truly aliens. And it is clear that TS is a huge part of this. To be honest, if I was MXM and Shellback I would try to have TS join their team. They are absolutely EXTRAORDINARY together. As for TS, I only started like her in 2012 because of the 3 MXM/SB songs. And now I can say she is my favorite female artist. She sounds absolutely fantastic on this album. Her vocals are more on point than ever. I can only attribute this to the insane vocal production skills of MXM (and I think she obviously feels most comfortable with him). All in all, I can't wait to keep listening and I am going to make a bold prediction right now: "Blank Space" will be the next single and it will go #1. Here's another prediction: this has a chance to rival Teenage Dream in terms of Max's best pure pop work and might have similar if not better success on the charts. I counted at least 5 more potential #1 singles in there. Don't be surprised if MXM breaks the record for most #1's very, very soon.
The photos, voice memos and behind the scenes video of Max and Shellback are great! Kind of shows us their personalties a little more, which is cool since they are usually so private it's hard to tell. First of all, Max seems like a funny and relaxed guy. He's also got some guns! Seems he's been working out. Shellback looks like he's a little shier than I imagined. Also looks like a relaxed kind of guy.

You better continue R.I.P.-ing! :-X ;D
I don't think the productions sounds outdated at all. The production for Style is a bit too similar to Love me harder imo.
EDIT: Wonderful, Blank Space, All you had to do was stay are my favorites after the first listen :)
Ryan Tedder's song I know Places kind of rips off You're The Voice by John Farnham.
Btw, I can not yet comment on the album, I need a few more listens. But I hear some hits.
Fabulous: "All you had to to was stay"
It's sometimes very Avril-ish.
Off topic: I would love Max and Ryan Tedder to work for a song.
Nothing on her record that was produced by Max sounds as epic as I Knew You Were Trouble or even 22 and We Are Never Getting Back Together!
The mood he made for her is kind of "retro" kind of 70's and not the usual him.
After more listens...

"Wonderland" is quite nice though, but probably a good choice for a bonus track.
This album is just..WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW !!!!!
I had a listen and it really sounds like an album, most tracks have the same sound and there seems to be a lot of work behind every track. Don't really feel they are looking for lots of hits but rather wanted to put out something with some thought behind it, something that feels like a group of tracks belonging together.
However I think the mixing is way too bland, nothing sticks out and that makes me lose interest to some extent -especially when taylor doesn't have that voice that can carry a track by itself. Another thing that struck me was that the level is kinda low, a lot lower than it would have been some years ago.. Maybe that's a good thing.
My favourite so far is Blank Space.

Lots of reverb will do that. I'd still would've liked the synths to sound more present, but you gotta sacrifice some of that to make it sound bigger.
Pretty amazing, when everyone is saying albums are finished, nobody cares, don't bother, people only want singles, etc etc that Taylor is getting all this press for this album....and no doubt a lot of sales. Quite an achievement!!

Didn't think of it but you're 100% correct -there's A LOT OF REVERB on this on this one! Trance amounts.. Still they haven't gone for that huge sound, most stuff's in the middle. Must have been a very conscious decision.
Serban Ghenea mixes most of the dr luke/max martin stuff and he's usually on point but here I really would have liked the vocals more upfront and the mix a little more limited..
ok, I had another go at the album and that reverb is everywhere..! :-\
I think Taylor went to martin and asked for something that sounds like 'royals' -he said "sure I'll just dial up my 480.."
Just that he turned it up way too much.
Here'e something else for reverb-lovers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dFz10R529g
i bought the album at Target today. i love the inclusion of the 3 voice memos - wish she recorded more! I listened to them first before listening to their respective studio versions... the Tedder song is really nice actually. her vocals at the very end are great. it's nice knowing Taylor really is a prominent part of the lyrics and melodies of these songs. it gives the album the full package. like they're not just catchy songs; they're coming from this girl's mind. pair that with Max/Shellback production and it's heaven.
Wildest Dreams is fantastic. her voice is really lovely when she's not pushing it - and the production is so blissful. the lyrical content really reminds me of Lana Del Rey. this is a standout along with Blank Space (that chorus is undeniable) and Style. the pulsating rhythm and lyrics, melody, her vocals.
quite a few of these songs (Bad Blood and All You Had To Do Was Stay) sound like Avril i noticed. but that ain't a bad thing... just makes me wish Avril did an album exec-produced by Max haha.
The Imogen Heap track is nice. only listened to it once but I can appreciate the production and immi's bg vocals. just the first day of listening to the album but this one will stay fresh for a while.

I agree that the mixing makes makes some songs less interesting for me. I prefer when you actually can hear the guitars not only drums and vocals, for instance. This is something Taylor wanted I guess and you can really hear her Lorde inspiration, especially on Wildest Dreams. Also a bit of Lana Del Rey ;)
Now I've had 4-5 listens and no songs reach up to their 3 songs on Red imo, maybe How You Get The Girl melodywise, but not production wise. :-\
BUT; They had a different approach when making these songs. I think they focused more on making a complete album, and actually this album is more sonically put together than Red.
AND; I think Taylor came in with a lot of the melody-ideas, we know for sure Blank Space, and Max/Shellback let Taylor write most of her own album and they produced it and was more of 2 co-writers.
Did you get the album Benny? or you're still based on 1.30 previews? :P
Steady. Thanks for that. Max will surely appreciate and improve next time so that it meets your standard.
I only just bought the cd today. My favourites are Style and How You Get the Girl as well as Shake it Off obviously. Overall I love the album, it's beautiful. I love the photos of Max and Shellback too in the cd sleeve, so cool.
Would be interesting to get some more insight as to Max and Shellback's involvement in the album. Blank Space seems to be a song that was mostly written beforehand and MXM/SB mostly produced it. Judging by the 3 voice memos, those songs were pretty much written by TS. But I wonder if those are the only ones she mostly wrote herself and that's why the voice memos were put out. I know that it's incredibly important for TS and her team that she be viewed as the songwriter. I even remember her taking most of the credit for the MXM/SB songs on Red as well. I'm not saying it's being embellished because everyone in the industry knows that TS is a great writer in her own right. Just really curious what parts were done by who. The melodies on this album are really super amazing. Some of them, like How You Get the Girl, sound 100% MXM.
As you could imagine -and as Taylor said on the voice memos- there are a lot of ways to make music.
I think they crafted the songs from different ways: from scratch, writing to a track, from a previous idea, etc.
I've been listening the album and I think I don't like it that much in comparison to her previous releases.

That's a great question. It is one of my favorites on 1989, but I don't think it's the strongest song on the album. That said, I think fans connect to more than just lyrics , and with TS the lyrics are usually always fantastic. I think it's more the overall vibe of the song and I think the chorus is actually very strong. It doesn't jump out as a traditional big hook but it's what I like to call a "creeper." You find yourself singing it non-stop.
I'd also like to note that since we know TS was the one who wrote and brought the song to MXM/SB, it probably has more of the TS feel that her fans love.

So, the thing is: you can get stuck with a song with melody OR lyrics.
And maybe with a beat?
Quote from: j.fco.morales on November 01, 2014, 05:21:55 PM
So, the thing is: you can get stuck with a song with melody OR lyrics.
And maybe with a beat?
I'm off the school of thought that it's melody that attracts people first and foremost. Maybe not all the time for all people, but I think this is true most of the time. I think great and interesting lyrics can absolutely pull someone in, and maybe even sometimes bring them back, but the hook(s) of the song is what will get stuck in someone's head. Personally speaking, I go back and listen to my favorite songs because of the melodies. That doesn't mean lyrics are not important, but take a lyric like "I Kissed A Girl" for example. Most people would agree that the lyric itself contributes to it being a hit. Genius. But that melody. Yeah, it's pretty damn
amazing. Go ahead, hum it in your head or out loud. It's there... I Kissed a girl and I liked it.
I also think aspects of a beat can be hooks too, but probably more so synth lines that have hooks to them. With that said, there's plenty of EDM songs that are pretty brilliant at "hooking" the listener with minimal to no lyrics at all.
This is all to say that... whatever makes "Style" a hit with fans, it's probably
mostly a combination of both lyrics and melody.
It's all personal opinion anyway, and that's mine. ;D
My first language isn't english, and i actually start learning it at 17, so i can assure that for most people the melody is the most important part of a song. I did not understand a bit of what Britney sang in baby one more time, but i still liked it
"Swiftamine" :-) Hilarious film short from last night's Saturday NIght Live.......http://headlineplanet.com/home/2014/11/02/snl-prescribes-swiftamine-taylor-swifts-1989-sales-explode/
The album as a whole is amazing! Masterpiece by both Max and Taylor.
I love Max's bridges and I think Style's is just phenomenal, even though it's just one line: "Take me home." There's something so cool about it that I can't put my finger on.
"Wonderland" currently my favourite. It's so brilliant!!
It's official: 1.287 million first week sales. Wow.
To put it into perspective, I have compiled these facts:
- It becomes the first album released this year to sell a million copies.
- Only 18 albums have sold a million copies in a week previously. Count that... 18.
- Only 6 albums have sold more than in the first week than 1989. Count that... 6. See them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fastest-selling_albums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fastest-selling_albums)
- The most ever albums sold in the first week by a female act is 1.319 million copies by Britney Spears' Oops! ... I Did It Again in 2000.
- Swift sold 470,000 copies of 1989 at Target, which carried a deluxe edition of the album with six additional tracks. In other words, Swift sold more copies of her album at Target than the year's next-highest debut — Coldplay's Ghost Stories, with 383,000 — sold everywhere.
Incredible.

About the thread: am I the only one who's not really into 1989?
You're no the only one j.fco. I find out really annoying that everywhere on the Internet there's something about Taylor, specially on Billboard, her unofficial sponsor.
1989 is a good album, but nothing new or that is going to change the industry. It's important because pop albums this year were lame in sells, just that.

A syncope is when you alterate the accent of some rhythm and put it in a place where it's not common, sometimes can feel off beat.
It's really common in many genres actually, specially melodically.
For example: this bassline over that four to the floor beat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDuYFONO4QU
That's it.
Taylor performed "Style" at the VS show. It is a perfect title for the show but I also think it's because that will be the next single.

There are 2 Tomas's - Tom Talomaa and also Tomas Ljung - he is the guy that answers emails at Maratone and I think he might help in the studio too.
Anyway, great that Taylor is nominated for some Grammy's. Shake if Off should win.
Is it just me or does "Style" rip Katy Perry off from the start? Not even the production, but the annunciation, "belting" (more like screeching for taylor), the "ahhhhs"? I love 1989, but it feels like Teenage Dream-lite.

About what, exactly? I'm curious.
I think he refers to the backing vocals at the end of the song (The "ahhh" going down"), which may be similar to those used in wide awake - you can hear them better from 3:13 mark. Still, i don't think this is a copy, but just a widely used technique. The instrumental is more similar to Do What U Want by Lady Gaga - Both have that heavy sound in the background i don't know how to describe
After the Katy Perry comparison, I imagined Style being sung by Katy and it sounded much better in my head.
Taylor voice sounds so thin in the recordings...

It's the same recording, the official release.

Yes, I know. But I wonder if she sings over the fully produced tracks, or over a track in a earlier production state and all comes together later then?

Style picking up steam on radio, but still not doing great on Hot 100. That's because Blank Space is still dominating radio, streaming and sales. I think as BS dies down, Style will pick up and reach Top 40 and higher (already is Top 40 on radio).
Did not realize this, but apparently Style is not officially impacting radio until February 10. Based on how well it's doing I am pretty sure this song is going to hit #1 sometime in mid-February. Incredible.
Prediction: Style will be number 1 within the next 2-3 weeks. #1 record #20 for Max.

You realize it's only the verse that are live? And they don't sound 100% live either.
To me she's more talking than singing and just barely hits the right note...
She sings exactly as I first time saw her with breathless out of tune Back To December / Apologize performance at some show.
She is stabile. ;D
She's one of those artists who are better in the studio. Like Katy Perry. They need engineering and pitch correction. Their voices are just suited for recording studios.

It's a live performance: the choruses always have BGVs, even in performances and concerts.
There's some things that you can't do 100% live and it makes sense, in case you want to give a good performance.

This is slightly off topic but in Style, the verse and bridge sounds very BSBish, and to be specific something that Brian would be doing. I wonder how much writing she's actually doing with Max. A lot of these artists changes a few words and or a line and are credited.
In this case in particular, I think she wrote to an Ali Payami track and worked the topline and lyrics with Max and Shellback.
In other cases, like Blank Space or How To Get The Girl, she comes up with the almost finished idea.
I wonder if in some cases Max picks up the work of Ali and Ilya and makes it "better". I know Max and Rami did this for Shape of My Heart way back when, they bought the rights and did a 180 degrees on the song. He also did the same for "Come Along".
I guess its more of a label thing to send the song to a producer to redo.

It's what I think it happened, with Love Me Harder -another Ali Payami track- being recorded/written around the same time... no sources, just my opinion.
If you listen to the voice memos, she said the songs came from different places and she started writing to a track, so it makes sense.

I'm sceptic. As Max doesn't seem to like writing to track, and as he had this level of involvement in this project from the get go, I figure she only really wrote to track on the Antonoff songs. I'm guessing they wrote in LA, maybe Taylor wrote most of it, I don't know - but it think the production was done post writing.
There are certain things that I would almost bet are Max. The hook of Love Me Harder and How You Get the Girl being in that category.

I tend to think they had the Ali Payami track -because of the many similarities with Love Me Harder, the songwriting/melodic approach it's way different from his previous catalogue- and them added some parts and extra production post writing, just like you said.
I want to make sure guys, we're based on assumptions.
"Style" will be #1 on radio this upcoming week, finally knocking off "Uptown Funk" from the top spot. It's taking a little longer to hit #1 Hot 100 because of Uptown Funk's success as well as other big records out at the same time (Ellie, Maroon 5, etc). I would not be surprised to see either combination of "Style" and "Love Me Like You Do" as #1 and #2. Ellie's record is doing better in terms of digital sales at the moment and picking up more steam on radio.
Officially the #1 song on Top 40 radio. I wonder how many that makes for Max?

Maybe it was exactly the intention, as the song is about Katy apparently.
It's amazing how Max is cool with all these artists beyond fights and rivalry.
this is a silly comparison. the melodies are far from being the same and with the harmonic context it's a complete different feeling
btw: how can it be that Style is by far the most popular Max song of this album? :o :o :o to me it's by far his worst one on this record smh
I wonder which song will be the next single.
It's only similar rhythmically, not melodically.
Style has grown on me a little bit, still not my fave on the album.
They are likely testing the next single now. My pick would be Bad Blood for sure.

Well it'll be nice after this kind of hard-hitting (for Taylor's standards), somewhat aggressive single, with the assist from Kendrick Lamar, to get one of the more sugary sweet tracks from 1989.
I'm thinking it'd be awesome to see her release All You Had To Do Was Stay or How You Get The Girl. those two sort of harken to Taylor's original bubbly, girly and confessional sound. They're also great pop songs. Totally fit for radio.

As far as I know the radio mix was Max/Shellback. I think this one has a shot at #1.
At this point, Taylor can fart and make a single out of it and have a #1 single.

Pretty much, although Style "only" peaked at 6.

As I said before, I don't reduce things to sales numbers and radio play.
But if you like to talk about numbers, let's wait until we get the numbers about concert revenues next year.
i mean, i heard Style on the radio every time I turned it on, and i barely ever listen to radio.
I put only in quotations because it was a joke. Anyone would be happy with that position.
Actually, we could live from royalties our whole lives with a #6.

Indeed, very true!
To your point that anything Taylor puts out is going to be successful: yes of course, this is true. To bring up another point you made, it's not just about numbers, it's the quality of the records. I still feel the quality of the songs on 1989 are simply amazing, whether it's Taylor Swift or not. Take the names and numbers out of the equation and it's one of, if not the best albums this year.
The thing is: I'm stuck with her country albums. The songwriting is a leap back, but it's OK for pop standards.
I'm not a big fan of 1989, songwriting wise. Even me, being a 30 years old guy, could relate to her songwriting.
Taylor wrote some amazing lyrics -man, All Too Well, I Almost Do, Fifteen, Begin Again- and to me, 1989 it's not up to her previous work.
Or maybe I tend to like people telling stories with a guitar instead of a pop star with glitter and pyro.

I disagree, respectfully. The songwriting from a pop perspective is amazing. It's not just OK for pop standards. It's really, really superior melodic work. I am of the mindset that writing great pop music is the hardest thing to do. I do respect country songwriting, but it's completely, completely different. It's about the lyrics, the story. Pop is simplicity and melody. Taylor, Max and Shellback KILLED it.
That's just my opinion.

what do you guys think of the single mix production?
It's fantastic. Just a really well crafted song and production. Doesn't get in the way, supports the melody and vocal performance.
Which are the differences? The "single mix" is the version in the video?
Haven't heard it properly.
By the way, 1989 tour is the higher grossing tour of the year.
yes, video is the same as the single mix. they programmed additional drums for it. and I think they added an additional bar around the mid 8.
the final chorus contains an actual snare sound now.

This is going to blow it everywhere.
"Wildest dreams" made it to #10. Yet another one. Well done.
Do you think there will be another one?
I think she's going after the "most top ten hits from one album" record.

That's for sure.
Did anyone listen the Ryan Adams record? It's huge.
All You Had To Do Was Stay, Wonderland and How You Get The Girl are the potential top 10s.

Taylor talking about 1989.
Why Grammy didn't invite Martin and Shellback?
That would be a dream. But it's nice to hear Taylor Swift about the making of.
Max doesn't do interviews.

Love the song: reminds me of CHVRCHES.
The wolves in the video, they remind me of Twilight and Taylor Lautner, her ex ;)

I'm not really sure about the single choice, but I wasn't sure about Wildest Moments and ended up loving it.
Speaking about Wildest Dreams, does anyone know Lana del Rey's Without You?

How Taylor Swift Writes Melodies | Holistic Songwriting S1E1
I wonder why he never mentioned all the arrangements that could possibly fit in one note when talking about vocal production.
Repetition, echoing, pitchshift, whatever, these things makes always the difference and Max is very good at it.

Because his blog-title is "Songwriting".
