I think we should start a new thread for this album, otherwise the other thread gets too big. That way it's just clearer in my opinion. Maybe turnaround wants to merge some posts again :D if not, delete my thread ...
Good idea. New era, new thread. And I believe there will be much to talk about. :)
Yay, a title and Max is of course included.

AMAZING NEWS! :)
Oh lawd...the name will cause controversy
Prism and the single is called roar? hahahaha! WHAT?
now i get it why dr luke tweeted it. haha hes been very reticent about her upcoming album
btw prism is cool name.
Dr Luke Twitter:
"t's not dark but it does sound different !!! still positive, uplifting.. catchy !!!"
;)
I'm pretty sure they will put a prism on the cover so that they get the illuminati reference ...
I feel like it's gonna have that classic low pass acoustic guitar intro, same vibe from "Die Young", but bigger and more Epic.
There are teasers, but I can't watch due to country restrictions, but I can't be bothered to use a proxy.

Well you aren't missing out on anything.. Just some video clips of Katy being "darker" - no music to be heard
Yup just Katy among a crowd and while are the other people are sad Katy smiles at the camera
So she is leaving the "Teenage Dream" ego behind? I want the new song, NOW :D
Both clips show her saying goodbye to her old persona... one at a grave site and another with her burning her blue wig. I'm really looking forward to this new side of her.

I'm really looking forward to this. I don't want it to be dark. I hope it's joyful!
I also want fresh pop music. "A part of me" could be a great direction she can go. So looking forward to this album.
I want a new sound but I hope it be good and not boring , Dark music can be great too.
isn't it AWESOME how they do this? with the whole memorial, burning blue wig, etc? that's promo at it's best... generating a huge amount of buzz and hype. I'm like.. I want to hear this NOW.
gnnnnnnnnnnnargh!
I love it when they create something like this. Even though the risk of creating too high expectations is looming right next to the hype. :)
Dr Luke and Cirkuit have been recording Indian musicians for the Katy Perry song(s) :D
So a bit oriental/excotic stuff as in "Come and get it" ?
Sounds interesting!
I want a tracklist with all credits NOW :D
khan: how come you know? :)

2 seconds of the song can be heard.
Amaaaaaazing!
^ it's 4 seconds...calm down
4 days left, I sure the song will match my expectations.
I can't wait for it!!
they always make these teasers.. i remember when part of me they made like 10 seconds teasers lol
You have to admit, that's a pretty good sounding 4 seconds!
Axel, I think the only risk of disappointment is that the word "dark" has been spread around so much that people will be expecting all sorts of things as a result.

Song is up for pre-order.
this looks really really ugly, doesn't it? The font, the jacket, what the hell?
it looks like a bad cover from the 80s with Kim Wilde on it or something. :)
Neither a fan of that cover but more important is:
ROAR:
Katy Perry, Lukasz Gottwald, Max Martin, Bonnie McKee & Henry Walter
It's exactly the "Wide Awake" team.

indeed it looks something like from the 80s.. jackie chan movie or something poster!!
It's totally an 80's throwback... the border, the grey gradient background, her pose... it's ok to look horrible if it's in aid of being retro. :D That being said, I do love this fanart cover:

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
I love that message of the song already and image. Amazing.
I actually don't care about that.
I just love the production and the melodies. And Hottie Perry of course.
Sounds big. Can't wait to listen to the full version.
You go, girl. We love everything about this already.
It got lots of "new" sounds for a Luke/Max production, yet so typical them both!
her songs get darker and darker..
yep, Part Of Me was already pretty dark
Can't wait to hear the full version!
OMG! , it sounds amazing!
Perfect... man I can't wait for this!
The song leaked, unfortunately (or fortunately) Youtube is quite fast with deleting the links, but you'll find it trough Google for sure.
First impression: Not that overwhelmed, but maybe it's a grower
The wait is over:
http://www.soundcloud.com/superleak/katy-perry-roar
Pretty disappointing
Maybe it's just me, but during the chorus I always wait for the "when I tell the punch line wrong" lyric. The chorus definitely reminds me of the "Teenage Dream" verse melody.

Haha yeah you're right, it's the same. Well for me this song met all my expectations. Simple but brilliantly written pop, I'd even take it over most of the singles from the last album. I feel the same way about this as I did The Wanted's "Walks Like Rihanna", it has a more traditional pop vibe and for me it works perfectly.
EDIT: It's getting pulled left, right and centre, try this link: http://www.justjared.com/2013/08/10/katy-perry-roar-listen-now-to-full-song/ (http://www.justjared.com/2013/08/10/katy-perry-roar-listen-now-to-full-song/)
It's an amazing song. Very interesting production.
For me, it sounds very inspired by M83-Outro. That would not be a coincidence, since M83 publicly said that wanted to work with her.
I have to add that it reminds me of some other songs. The verse sounds likely to Ho Hey by The Lumineers, and well, most of it is Brave by Sara Bareilles.
I'm not saying they copy/paste it. There are so many elements in here to discuss. I can´t say it's original, but it's different for everyone involved.
Anyway, it's good to hear the boys and Katy are trying to sound different without losing that drug effect.
I didn't like it :(

Hahahha I knew it since everybody else liked it! But I'm with you this time, however it will take only a few days until I love it ;)
At first listen, I like the production: the drum programming and the synths sounds really good.
But I don't think is a strong song at all. I think it's all about the chords.
I'll give it a few more listens, maybe is a grower.
Meh, song is alright. Will do well on the radio, but nothing to write home about.
Well , good song but not amazing , I hope it grows with the listens.
yep, good but not amazing to me either, it's a weird song to me, but maybe it's a grower
I don't like the album cover either, why would she use an animal theme? Kesha's already done that.
Give it time, I think many of you will grow to like it.
Rebecca, I think Katy has always had an affiliation with cats. There are so many photos of her with cats, even her fans are called "Katy Cats". So I'm guessing the point of the song is to say that she's no longer a kitty, but a Lion or Tiger.

LOVE the song! Just bought it on iTunes :) I give it a 9!
but the similarity to Sara Bareilles' "Brave" is suspicious!

She also gave a brief insight into the mechanisms of songwriting.
"Well, you know, we work with Dr Luke and Max Martin, they're like melodic geniuses, and they kind of come to us with tracks," she said. "Katy had ideas about what she wanted. So she had a very specific idea of what she wanted. They come back with the track and we kind of find the story within the track."

Hmm, the first two chords in the verse are the same which means nothing, tiny part of the verse melody slightly matches, they're the only other two things I can pick. The beat isn't the same, the structure of the song isn't the same, the lyrics aren't the same... I think it's an overreaction for people to say she's ripped it off. Inspired by the production of the verse maybe, what else though?
Just realised that the bass is genius! Pure perfection.
Speaking of it, the first verse of "Brave" lacks a bass at all.
And the middle8 - all what happens 2:40 is so epic. ROAR ROAR ROAR

Yeah! , Although it's 2# in the Hot 100.
What has influence on the chart position in the USA?
Because Blurred Lines didn't sell 300,000 copies.
so the 250,000+ copies that Roar sold more gotta be made up by video purchases and YouTube clicks.
The Billboard Hot 100 chart rankings are based on radio plays and sales. Often the radio plays need a bit more time to build up monumentum, but otherwise they also grant chart longevity.

YouTube streams (played within the US) are now counted too, there's even been some controversy over people using playlists of the same song repeated over and over to increase views. How on earth "Blurred Lines" is still managing to top the chart after several weeks, considering all the hype of Katy and Gaga, is beyond me.

Ugh walking on air is bad. The other preview didn't work on my phone.
"Dark horse" is great. A bit darker indeed. Great shouts. But then there starts a will.i.am-ish beat. I hope they dit not destroy the song with that.
"Walking on air" sounds like it has a sample which I can't name right now though. Not sold yet.
''Dark horse'' sounds great until the William part....
''Walking on air'' sounds good but with a dated production.
i was expecting a lot better. judging by Roar and knowing Luke is involved, these are very weak. Dark Horse has strange lyrics and rushed phrasing of "perfect storm, perfect storm"... Walking on Air is bearable and could be good, but as someone said, sounds dated and honestly a bit generic. Both songs sound like fillers, or the tracks toward the bottom of the tracklist.
are these the best two tracks after Roar? or what? there's gotta be another TGIF or TD.

I mean Katy is hot indeed but not in a boxer dress, whereas she wore a stunning dress on the red carpet.
musical-wise the performance was not that special in my book. way too much playback for a pop-performance, but I loved the special drum part!!! there you could hear the amazing drum production :D
I absolutely loved the performance. It was very story driven and all the characters had a purpose in telling the story. Well choreographed, and the backdrop was of course spectacular. So much better than all the other performances where people are needlessly gyrating or otherwise stripping and everything is a mess with no logical story. A+ Katheryn Hudson!

"Even though I'm older, I'm wiser. I'm very excited to put visuals to the songs and play them live," the 28-year-old singer said about the album. She told us that half of the songs were made in Santa Barbara and the other half in Stockholm.
While only 11 songs were played at the listening session, we can report that there will be 13 songs on the regular album and 16 songs on the deluxe album. The songs that were played are not in the order that they will come on the album.
Make sure to tune into Good Morning America tomorrow morning (September 6) to catch Katy revealing the official album artwork for Prism!

"Legendary Lovers"-A slow, groovy song.
-Sample lyrics: "Take me down to the river/ Underneath the ____/ Say my name like a scripture/ Keep my heart beating like a drum/ Legendary lovers, legendary lovers, legendary lovers"
-There's a breakdown in the song that makes you want to belly dance. There's a howl toward the end.. "Ah-who-o-o-o!"
"Birthday"-Katy shared that it's an upbeat "song that Mariah Carey would have put on her first record."
-Sample lyrics: "I'll give you a taste/ Make you lick your body every day/ Give you something to satisfy... Give you something good to celebrate/ I know you like it sweet/ Make it like your birthday everyday."
-The breakdown: "Let me get you in your birthday suit."
-Song ends with a whisper, "happy birthday"
"Walking On Air"-Recorded in Stockholm, produced by Klas Åhlund.
-She was inspired by a "Central Park Day" where she was eating hot dogs with a friend and watching roller skaters perform to deep house music.
-Very 90′s dance divas a la CeCe Peniston and Crystal Waters.
-Sample lyrics: "Just when I think I can't take anymore/ We go deeper and hotter than ever before/ We go higher and higher, I feel like I'm already there/ I'm walking on air tonight"
-Check out Just Jared's previous post to listen to a preview!
"Unconditionally"-Katy's fave song on the record. She shared that she's the "most proud to have written" the mid-tempo song. Seems like the song written most about John Mayer.
-Sample lyrics: "Did I almost sin... all your insecurities..." Chorus: "Unconditional, unconditionally/ I will love you unconditionally. There is no fear now... I love you conditionally."
"Dark Horse" feat Juicy J -The urban song has Juicy rapping "She's a beast" of Katy.
Sample lyrics: "So you wanna play with magic/ Boy you should know what you're falling for/ Baby do you dare to do this/ Cause I'm coming at you like a dark horse.. Are you ready for, ready for/ Perfect storm, perfect storm/ Cuz once you're mine, once you're mine"
-Listen to a preview of this song now!
"This Is How We Do"-Club banger written in Stockholm and Just Jared's personal favorite!
-Sample lyrics: "Chanel this, Chanel that, hell yeah... Street stuntin' ya we do it like that/ Yeah this is how we do.. Bring the beat back"
"International Smile" -Upbeat, dancey song written for her DJ BFF Mia Moretti. Katy shared, "She travels all around the world. She's my muse. Don't tell my other friends."
-Sample lyrics: "That girl's a trip, one way ticket/ Takes you miles high, cause she's got that one international smile."
"Ghost" -Mid-tempo song written in Santa Barbara.
-Sample lyrics: "Every gift, every letter, every promise, there forever... now you're just a ghost.. vanish like a vapor... now I see clearly... my vision's 20/20... So rest in peace, see you on the other side."
"Love Me" -Made in Stockholm and produced by Bloodshy. Katy has wanted to work with him every since Britney Spears' "Toxic" (One of Just Jared's favorite songs!).
-"All the lyrics [to "Love Me"] are important to me," she shared.
-Sample lyrics: "I love myself in fear of losing you... I lost my own identity"... Love me, no more second guessing/ There's no more questioning/ I'll be the one to find who I love/ I can see you have feelings... I'm gonna love"
"Double Rainbow" -Wrote this melodic mid-tempo song with Greg Kurstin and Sia.
-Sample lyrics: "One man's trash is another man's treasure/ The two of us together... So if it's up to me, I'm gonna keep you forever... Brighter than the Northern Lights... Like a double rainbow in the sky... double rainbow time flies"
"By The Grace Of God" -This ballad closes out the regular record.
-Sample lyrics: "Lay on the bathroom floor/ Couldn't take it anymore... By the grace of God/ I looked in the mirror and decided to stay/ Wasn't gonna let love take me out... I thank my sister for keeping my head above the water... Every morning, I finally see myself again... Universe calling my bluff"
I totally love the music video... you can always rely on Katy for a big concept video! Takes me back to the days of Aqua, or something! :D

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop-shop/5687099/katy-perrys-prism-album-preview-10-things-you-need-to-know (http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop-shop/5687099/katy-perrys-prism-album-preview-10-things-you-need-to-know)
Quote- "Prism" Will Include 13 Songs On Its Standard Edition. There will be 16 on the deluxe version of the album, after 2010's "Teenage Dream" contained 12 regular tracks before its "Complete Confection" reissue added seven more. Perry played 12 new songs in total on Thursday night (including "Roar"), and noted that the songs that were played were not necessarily going to remain in that order on the final track list.
- Katy's Favorite Song On The Album Is Called "Unconditionally." With woodblock percussion and a dramatic bass line, "Unconditionally" doubles as the singer's favorite new track as well as the most mature offering on "Prism." An ode to love that looks past all flaws, the song acts as a compellingly grounded predicate to "Teenage Dream's" starry-eyed title track. "There is no fear now... I will love you unconditionally," Perry belts over the uncluttered arrangement.
- "Dark Horse" Features A Juicy J Cameo. Although the song title "Dark Horse" has already been revealed to fans, nothing can prepare KatyCats for "Prism's" snapping trap anthem, which features the only vocal guest star on the 12 new songs, Three 6 Mafia member Juicy J. Before the Oscar-winning MC spits his usual rapid-fire flow, Perry guides the grimy, incredibly simplistic production with questions like "Are you ready for a perfect storm?" Perry told Billboard following the listening session that "Dark Horse" was produced by Dr. Luke (who executive produced Juicy J's new "Stay Trippy" album) and Max Martin.
- "Prism" Is Greatly Informed By Swedish Pop. Perry told her audience of listeners that the new album was recorded partially in Santa Barbara, Calif. and partially in Stockholm, Sweden; a number of songs of the new LP evoke the music of Robyn, who served as an opener on Perry's California Dreams tour. "I'm such a huge Robyn fan," Perry gushed while introducing "Walking On Air," a vibrant, throbbing house song she made with Swedish producer-songwriter (and frequent Robyn collaborator) Klas Ahlund. Another Stockholm-born song, "This Is How We Do," is a wobbling dance track with a spoken-word bridge that carries "song of next summer" potential.
- Lyrically, "Legendary Lovers" Contains The Most Interesting Chorus. The woozy love song sounds unlike anything Perry has ever recorded, and focuses on the ideas of infinity and karma. "Take me down to the river/Underneath the blood-orange sun/Say my name like a scripture/Keep my heart beating like a drum," goes the epic hook.
- "Double Rainbow" Was Co-Written With Greg Kurstin and Sia. Kurstin brings the pop sensibility he's flashed with artists like Kelly Clarkson, P!nk and Tegan & Sara, while Sia's presence connects this sleek, shimmering pop track to "Titanium," another song with a powerful chorus that explodes upon impact. "One man's trash is another man's treasure... so if it's up to me, I'm gonna keep you forever," Perry sings on the breathy love track.
- "Birthday" Has (The Most) Smash Potential. Although there were a handful of songs played on Thursday night that could very well be ruling radio similarly to "Roar," "Birthday" is a stone-cold stunner, with busy but buoyant production, a deeply rhythmic impulse and joyful lyrical concept. "I wanted to do something that Mariah Carey would have put on her first record," Perry said while introducing the song, which serves as pop music's (superior) answer to Swizz Beatz's "Everyday Birthday" single with promises of "Make it like your birthday everyday."
- "Love Me's" Lyrics Mean A Lot To Katy. Produced in Stockholm by Bloodshy, whom Perry has wanted to work with ever since he helmed Britney Spears' "Toxic," "Love Me" is a self-empowerment mantra informed by Perry's dissolved marriage. "I lost myself in fear of losing you," Perry sings at the top of the song, before later concluding, "I know I have to love myself, the way I want you to love me." With a churning guitar buzz at its core, the racing electro-pop track allows "no second-guessing or concealing feelings" from the pop superstar.
- "International Smile" Was Inspired By Mia Moretti. The jet-setting DJ (who released a remix to Perry's "Teenage Dream" track "Peacock") is a close friend of Perry's, and the singer even called her a "muse" when it came to this straightforward pop-rock offering. With a kicky guitar hook and a melting, Daft Punk-esque vocoder breakdown, "International Smile" is a likable song that sounds the closest to Perry's "Teenage Dream" oeuvre.
- "Ghost" And "By The Grace Of God" Offer The Most Somber Moments. Both songs directly point to Perry's failed romance with Russell Brand, and both tracks slow down Perry's party tempo to achieve emotional resonance. On "Ghost," she sings over synth stabs, "We were best friends... now, you're just a ghost," while the piano ballad "By The Grace Of God" makes it clear that Perry struggled to continue her hectic life and career in the wake of damaged romance. "By the grace of God/I picked myself back up/I put one foot in the front the other," Perry croons on the track, which will end the regular edition of "Prism."

Same here, I was won over by the end of my first play. Definitely a slight step into a darker vibe.
Yup Dark horse is pretty much going to be the new sound of pop music for 2014.
RAAAAAAAAAAA the song is amazing!!!
What a waste of this beat ...
I wish there were some rappers on it but not Katy Perry -.-
I love it , but ''Roar'' is better!
The verses have nothing to do with the chorus! And Juicy J? WTF!!
I wanted more guitars.
Ke$ha's Supernatural is a really good reference: guitars and dubsteppy synths.

Great!
QuoteRenewed, Perry reunited with her creative team from Teenage Dream, spending a month in Santa Barbara, Calif., with longtime producer Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, frequent songwriting partner Bonnie McKee and Henry Walter, aka the young studio mastermind Cirkut. From there she headed to Stockholm to work with Scandinavian pop maestro Max Martin for a few weeks to put "the icing on the cake." In addition to those power players, Perry tapped such hitmaking collaborators as Stargate, Benny Blanco, Juicy J, Jonatha Brooke, Sia, Christian "Bloodshy" Karlsson and Klas Ãhlund of the Teddybears. (Perry shares co-writing credit on all of the tracks.)
Interesting that Max was in Stockholm. It doesn't happen too many times I guess.

Walking on Air: Katy Perry, Max Martin, Klas Åhlund, Caméla Leierth, Adam Baptiste
I quite like the track, but there's a silence on the middle 8 that annoys me so much... like a edit failure: 2.27.
cant wait to hear the full thing. hopefully it will be good. i like the song walking on air its so calm.
i wonder how much time dr luke and max martin spent time on these tracks in general??
Good question!
Btw - anyone watching Katy at the iTunes Festival?
It was really good, I really recommend it.
1. Walking on air
2. California Girls / Teenage Dream
3. I kissed a girl
4. Dark horse
5. A part of me
6. By the grace of God
7. Wide Awake
8. Fireworks
9. Roar
"By the grace of God" is a beautiful piano ballad, very intimate. Greg Wells played the piano on stage. melting-pop.tumblr.com/post/62746175888
The "will-i-am"-ish parts in "Dark Horse" were epic. It worked so well live with all the dancers and the atmosphere.
"I kissed a girl" was performed in a heavy-metal version.
It was really not good, I really can't recommend it. Hardly new songs and she isn't a good singer, at least this evening.
wait what?! will.i.am-ish part?!? lol
PS: didnt notice she was singing about burning forks ;D :D
lol

I don't think a successful songwriter follow these trends, it's for aspiring songwriters.
The things they write about the songs is stuff you can check only listening to the song, quite simple.
About Luke or Max reading the forum, they must be busy making hits...
Really nice Walking On Air...Eurodance beat!
There are 10 Max song on album!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG :o
"Dark horse" and "Walking on air" really grew on me a lot. They are really strong songs to release them as buzz-singles.
Next week friday they album will be released in Germany. I will try to get my copy on Thursday.
And:
QuoteIt is expected that Perry will perform the first two singles off of her new PRISM album "Roar" and "Unconditionally".

i think i will try to remix this song when i got some time over
There are 1.30 previews on iTunes, almost half a song of the whole album!!
I'm excited!
OOOH, so excited. I must wait until I can listen to them. AARGH.
Roar - H I T
Legendary Lovers - once again the Die Young / Crazy Kids / Ooh La La chorus drums. But it's a brilliant song. The verses are fantastic!!! Love the songwriting.
Birthday - Teenage Dream / California Gurls / Domino
Walking On Air - funny and well-made 90's homage
Unconditionally - chorus = Wide Awake, the verses are brilliant, great production!
Dark Horse - actually pretty similar to Legendary Lovers: pop chorus, urban verses. Awesome!
This Is How We Do - sounds uninspired, but still catchy
International Smile - reminds you instantly of Part Of Me. Typical Luke/Cirkut Drums. Melodies are ok.
Ghost - once again a brilliant verse production. The chorus is the weaker part again.
Love Me and Double Rainbow are good as well but the StarGate / Benny Blanco collaboration This Moment is disappointing.
I think I gonna buy the standard edition.
can someone post a link to these songs?
You need iTunes and have to switch to the US store. Outside iTunes I don't think there are snippets.
I love the tracks , ''Legenderay lovers'' sounds epic and different with these etnic drums!
I love too ''Unconditionally'' , ''Birthday'' is ''Domino'' 7.0 lol and ''This is how we do'' sounds very funny.
It has to be the best pop album of the year! , I liked all the snippets , it's a evolution of the Katy sound but with some songs with the typical ''Teenage dream'' sound.
Here they are:

The first seconds are muted for Roar, but from International Lovers on is ok.
Wow, great SOUND on all these clips.....I don't mean audio quality, I mean the overall sound of this album is very rich and full......there was something in each track I liked.....it's a perfect sound for an Autumn release :D
At first listen I liked the overall sound, but I'm not really into the songwriting and melodic stuff.
But I'm loving the production, especially on International Smile and Double Rainbow.
The album release is October 18.

Some moments in the credits were already amazing, but I need the full thing to judge properly. There will be definitely some big melodies and production masterpieces.
- "Legendary Lovers" is the best song on the album for sure, sounds so ABBA.
- Loving the production on "Birthday"
- "International Smile" sounds cool
- Loving the production on "This Moment"
- "Choose Your Battles" is going to be one of my favorites. Love Greg Wells' work.

Credits = snippets right? :D although reading the credits was amazing too :D
@j_a24: how is This Moment's production great?!? :o
So on second listen, my favorite of all these new clips is......."Ghost". It has that kind of rhythmic drive I love in the melody and chord progression/tempo, and has that "surge" effect in second part of chorus "....now I see it clearly....." "Ghost"-- Yeah. Kind of song I can play over and over, and I'll buy the album just to have it :D
i did not like it soo much, then again its my opinion. i liked roar, dark horse and this is how we do and walking on air.
my opinion :-[
I was not overwhelmed by the snippets - all is quite good - but I rely on the songs being growers.
Unfortunately there is only one song I liked which is "International Smile", the other tracks are less than average!
There is no ET or Part Of Me at all.... PRISM isn't as I expected it to be.
The first eight tracks of the album leaked.
The songs are quite better in full.
Legendary Lovers is AMAZING.
This is How We Do reminds me a lot of the AlunaGeorge's version of Montell Jordan's This Is How We Do, Klas Ahlund did an amazing job.
And I love International Smile, I love the synthy guitars, just like Part of Me!
Can't wait to listen the other half of the album...
You can listen some full tracks in here:

The album sounds good , but I expected something more , anyway I love most of the songs of the album , specially ''Legendary lovers'' sounds for me amazing , the best in the album in my opinion.
''Birthday'' and ''International smile'' sounds funny but a bit generic.
''This is how we do'' sounds very 90's and different.
I love ''Ghost'' , Very poppy and pure.
''Unconditionally'' is a big ballad but a bit repetitive in the chorus. The chorus reminds me a Mix of ''Wide awake'' and ''Daylight''.
For me the best are :
1-Legendary lovers
2-Roar(It growed in me so much)
3-Walking on air
4-Unconditinally
5-Dark horse
LOVE the triplets and the ethnic elements (Sitar/Percussion) in Legendary Lovers but the beginning of the chorus sounds like it's Ke$ha instead of Katy ???
fantastic song anyway, it's an ethnic/pop/dance/urban mix :) but my favorite song will be roar!!
YES! I was waiting for that Cirkut Daft Punk influenced vocoder/guitar effect that we got on Last Friday Night remix, Evil Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmh1p64KTAM), and Ke$ha's Thinking of You. It adds something funky to International Smile.
So far the best tracks are Legendary Lovers, This is How We Do, International Smile, and Unconditionally. Ghost is good too...
a bit disappointed in the Bloodshy production on 'Love Me' - the song is very trite; the melody, cheesy lyrics. I have a feeling the latter half of the album will follow suit. Re: Double Rainbow, By the Grace of God, Spiritual, It Takes Two, etc. they're all corny-sounding song titles.
funny how they used the "My Life Would Suck Without You" melody in the chorus of "International Smile"
it's really hilarious how much they actually copied on this album, but once again IT WORKS!
"Ghost" contains a "Yeah 3x" melody ;D

omg thank you so much for posting that link.........listened to all.....overwhelmed......I think this album has accomplished a kind of miracle......I mean, there's SOOO many really great songs, but it doesn't sound like a collection of singles...it sounds like an Album with a capital "A"......I truly think when this album sinks in to people's souls it's gonna be huge for a long time....not to mention there's an almost endless string of singles on there, so it works on two levels......plus it takes chances with some great sounds like with Indian music.....last thought: If Katy Perry hadn't done "Unconditionally" this song would've given Celine Dion a new #1 :D

I thought I was the only person that got caught by these arrangements.
To me, sounds more like Cirkut is freaked out with the vocal arrangement Klas Ahlund did on the middle 8 of Robyn's Call Your Girlfriend and tried to replicate it with a talk box processed on ProTools.
Very influenced by Daft Punk, of course.
Cirkut is a mastermind at sound designing!
I've been listening the album at work since it leaked in full and I'm really feeling it. It's not that pop I think, but works really well as a whole idea. I hear a lot of Lana del Rey inspired stuff, melodically and production wise mixed with other stuff.
I told a friend while listening: these are the best guys in the game working together.
They're out of any league, by far.
I actually like Double Rainbow and Spiritual as well - even This Moment - and the writing in It Takes Two - definitely hear John Mayer's influence.
The record as a whole is more vibey (as Britney keeps saying) with the more retro synths, less acoustic guitar, 80s drums, the campy shtick of International Smile, Birthday, Walking on Air, etc.
^ YES! of course I really love those moments in his songs. there's just something so clean and precise yet fanatic about it. The quick scales bouncing around mixed with the grating vocoder sound. It's creative, clever, sort of wacky, and melodic all at the same time. Wish they'd do that more.
The funny thing about the Max/Luke/Benny productions is that they don't sound typical of their styles. Even the vocal production isn't as tight and crisp as, say, on TGIF or Part of Me and Teenage Dream. Still, the production is good, but definitely more of a throwback style for Max and Luke.

Me too! Well the CD isn't stylish at all ??? But the booklet is indeed!!
Funny note: after leaving the record store I met the manager of my football club, Stefan Reuter. Maybe some you know him :)
A highly complimentary article on PRISM on Yahoo! News home page, including very nice words about Max & Luke.
http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/stop-the-presses/many-faces-prism-hear-katy-perry-superstar-collaborations-180453103.html
I have a feeling as big as 'Teenage Dream' was, PRISM is gonna be even bigger...........
Never. TD had like 7 monster hits - music- and succes-wise whereas Roar will be by far the most successful single off Prism. The next single (Unconditinally) won't doing well.

I don't think so , I think Prism will have almost 3 succesful singles , it won't top the success of Teenage dream but I think it will be a successful album.
Of course it'll be successful but George to the E said Prism gonna be more succesful and there I disagree.

"George to the E" here.......:D Here's why, you guys, I think it'll sell more......Katy is much more widely known to the general public now than even when "Teenage" came out......I mean, every soccer mom in the world probably knows "Roar", and maybe I'm wrong but wasn't that her biggest selling single ever? So she's going into this with even more advantage than before.......I mean, I guess if "Unconditionally" doesn't do well there could be a problem, but I think that song will be huge. Plus, I think there's at least 5 more big singles on there besides "Roar" and "Unconditionally"......
No firework is still her best one
I think the other "hits" are only hits to us. WOA and Dark Horse already flopped.
Edit: I knew you would like "George to the e" :D

:D :D After I said that about "Roar", I checked and here's how Billboard ranks her 10 biggest singles (this was written just before "Roar" was released). http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5645538/katy-perrys-10-biggest-billboard-hits?page=0%2C1
Anyway, this is just purely based on an instinct I have......we'll have to check back in a year and 6 months and see, but I love these liittle debates we have :-) btw, B, WOA and Dark Horse were never really official singles yet though, right?
But WOA and DH won't be singles anymore and I think DH would've been a great 2nd single!
Btw if I had one wish free then it was Bonnie and Katy doing a pesbian lorn! (Lord have mercy)
I think there will be some #1 hits on the album, but the successs of Teenage Dream it's hard to achieve.
Michael Jackson went nuts trying to achieve the level of success of Thriller...
But the BAD sales weren't BAD at all :D
Walking On Air mid8 is so cheirontastic at the end. E-Type-ish, also lyric-wise :)
I hope ''Walking on air'' and Dark horse be Singles , ''Titanium'' of Guetta was first promotional single and then it was a official single and was a hit.
The most disappointing moment of Prism is when you notice the beat doesn't come back at the end of "Dark Horse" :(
There are two things I just don't get:
1st the clicks in Unconditionally. I mean they must be deliberate but then I don't know why. It sounds like they forgot to set the fades ...
2nd the TIHWD pre chorus. How could Max let this happen?!

I don't get the same things you don't get: that prechorus.
And that error of edition on Walking on Air... and that need of talking in the songs, I don't like that at all.
And I've been singing Legendary Lovers all day, I showed the song to a singer I work with -and he hates pop- and said it sounds like a mix of Lana del Rey and Florence and the Machine, which is I agree.
We agree again, FINALLY! :)

wait, please explain what's wrong with the TIHWD pre chorus. you don't like the "it's no big deal"?
I love the Indian music elements in breakdown of "Unconditonally"........sounds like tabla, mixed with other things? Brilliant use of this in a power ballad....more I hear this song, get ready.......it will be "Unescapably" on radio.
The clicks, B.........just an audio hook to keep it fresh, love them. I agree on that prechorus of TIHWD though.....thank god that is basically a throwaway song anyway.......the REAL "How We Do" (Rita Ora) is 100x better than this.......

No, "Unconditionally"......that is an Indian rythym on that part, and to my ears, there's some kind of Indian instrument in there, but maybe our new Forum member from India can help on this? (Will buy CD on Tuesday anyway, so maybe it's in liner notes....)
Clicks.......can't answer that question for you except to say imagine that part without them.......then.......see why they did it?
Ah now I heard it! :)
I don't mean the "snare click" I mean that there's something clicking after each "snare" sound. It sounds like they forgot to make an fade-out of an audio clip.

Wow good ears....I can't hear exactly what you mean though. Which headphone (left or right) is it loudest in? I listened about 5 times, and all I hear after the "snare click" is that kind of "sucking" effect, like a reverse something or other, but I'm sure that's not what you mean......can't hear any extra 'clicks' there. (I'm listening to the VEVO lyric video on YOuTube).
I heard the CD loud on my stereo and there it was pretty obvious - at least to me

I'll keep trying.....fascinated by these things. It's funny when you first mentioned "clicks" my first thought was this track by Cirkut from 2012 which has these really cool off-beat clicks in the left headphone which mimic the pattern of the kick drum, but the clicks are totally syncopated, off the beat...pretty unique.......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2Pa1_96iMU
It's Dr. Luke as well
Back to the clicks: I hear them more on the left side. It simply doesn't sound clean. There's also something like a crackle, that's ok but there are clearly some clicks and they're making me crazy :D
Referring to "Better than I know myself":
Listen to Rihanna - You Da One and B.o.B - Both Of Us. There they used the same or at least similar sounds and arrangements/patterns.
Btw: I've been listening to Both Of Us like 100 times since it's out (May 2012) but only a few days ago I discovered a new element in the production: after any 2 bars you can hear an "ooh ooh", it's probably Taylor's voice but I never heard it before. I was like: wtf? How did I never hear this before?!
About Unconditionally: the FX on the snare -it's like a Lana del Rey esque percussion snare- is a reverb patch.
And I'm not sure if the sounds you hear is the same I hear: they're panned to the right, isn't? If so, they're sticks.
On the middle eight actually, there's some indian stuff that sounds like a pizzicato.
It's layered under a organ sound doing the chords.
I'd love to hear the bass track: I want to know is that's a synth bass.
With so much layering it's hard to figure it out.
And I loved that Adam Lambert track, I still can't understand how the song didn't chart better...
I think y'all know some shit about music production. Therefore you should know how it sounds when you don't set the fades at the beginning and at the end of and audio clip - it clicks. And I can hear this type of sound immediately after every "snare" and it simply doesn't sound right to me.

Loudness war...
Explain...
I'm SOLD.
And yes, B Steady - the CD is not that stylish, but the booklet and sleeve. Luckily this time the cd does not smell.
Basically I love already:
Roar
Unconditionally
Legendary lovers
Dark horse (I did not expect it - but wow, it's bizzarely catchy)
This is how we do (The ending is so fabulous and classy. When Katy says: "Bring the beat back"....I just love gimmicks like that)
The other songs are all quite good already, I don't feel the urge of skipping any track. The only song I kinda dislike is "Spiritual"
Kinda does nothing to me - yet.
I wondered how Katy could top "Teenage Dream" but I think she managed. It's at least as good. The ballads are even stronger than any ballad she did before.
Max in both teams (Dr Luke and Ahlund) as always a genius.
The other teams (Greg Wells, Greg Kurstin, Stargate) have a tough job, Max and Katy just seem to have a strong bond and are a perfect match.
I love me some Juicy J :D :D
His part is awesome! :D
how are you guys missing International Smile? haven't seen you mention that.
it's such a fabulous, cheeky tightly produced song. the way she sings the verses - different emphasizes on words, and the drawn out whineyness of the chorus. and the fantastic Cirkut vocoder part. the best tracks are definitely -
Roar
Legendary Lovers
This is How We Do
International Smile
and the 2nd best - still good, but not amazing, are
Unconditionally
Dark Horse
Ghost
Birthday
Replace TIHWD with Dark Horse ;)
This is how we do is one of the worst on this album imo
"International Smile" - I feel it, but not that much as the other tracks yet.
But I will give all songs lots of chances and I feel such potential in all tracks.
"Moon Landing" album has to wait a bit, right now I'm DESPERATELY HOOKED ON PRISM.
Oh - has anyone yet noticed Max singing background vocals with Katy on DH? I am yet to discover it.

He's probably the Synth voice ;D
No I think the "ahhhhs" and "heys" in the chorus could be him. Also the pitched down voice. Plus the harmony voices in the second verse or the background vocals at the end of Juicy's part .... lots of possibilities
It must be hearable. Because: "If you can't hear it, delete it." 8) 8)
And one can hear it.
I'd say the HEYs and the background vocals in Juicy's part are Max.
is juicy j a member from tree six mafia? ???
Yes, he is.
And yesterday I listened to Unconditionally in my car and heard the clicks on the left.
Good ear B Steady!
B Steady, what do you do with the prism that comes with the booklet?
Thanks Jose :)
@turnaround: I think it's a tattoo. Therefore I won't do nothing with it ;D
where are the clicks in Unconditionally? the very beginning?
Immediately after every "snare" sound. Yea at the very beginning you can hear them the best since Katy isn't singing there.
This is hilarious!

It's not the faders, it's a vinyl crackle effect and they use deliberately in 98% of their drum tracks. I just don't get the big fuzz you're making out of it, there are songs that have way more in it than this one.

It's obnoxious and a punch line. It works.
15 year old girls will sing that part out loud in their pyjama parties.
Dat talk box solo after International Smile's bridge tho', why is no one is talking about that?
Or Ghost's chorus melody that goes like "There's just an echo where your heart used to be and now I see it clearly"... so good.
Or Max's Background vocals on Unconditionally in the outro.
Oh and Walking on air was a good idea that was not very well executed. And I was so pumped for the Bloodshy track, and it kinda let me down because I thought it was going to be something completely out of left field as always, but it sounded like the album. Still a decent song.
Album sounds very "Empire of the sun" sometimes. Which is a great thing, their latest album is amazing.
I already wrote that I hear the crackle sound too but the click is a different sound or it's a part of the crackle sound but then it would be way too loud.
we also talked already about the talk boy/vocoder thing and we love it. To it makes the whole song which is great anyway but the talk box solo puts the cherry on the cake!
what is the difference between the normal album and deluxe edition?

It's not only on the snare though, it's gated on the kick and the snare. I personally don't find it annoying or too loud, but it's definitely not a matter of not fading out the "pop and crackle" of the sample, they add that stuff deliberately.
And awesome, I have to read the whole thread, love the album so far. And the general message of the album, a more mature and down to earth Katy Perry.
Oh and for nznexus. the difference is that the deluxe version contains the bonus tracks. And perhaps more pictures and different artwork.

I think we don't mean the same sound. Because the click that I mean comes immediately AFTER the snare, so it's most likely not gated. You mean probably sounds like the crackle and stuff on the Beautiful Goodbye drums (Maroon 5, Benny Blanco) or the drums Max and Shelly used for Taylor Swift. And I didn't say it's probably a "fading fail" but it just sounds like it!

No, I know what sound you're talking about. It's definitely part of the crackle and pop effect man, I can hear it. It's like a little peaking artifact from it. You have a very keen ear for detail my friend :D
Edit: The release of the gate is slower that's why you still hear it after the hit.
An NzNexus, I heard that Luke worked with Shakira, Britney and JLO during the past year, so let's see if something comes out of it. Actually, Shakira was supposed to sign a deal with Kemosabe at some point, but nothing has come out of it.

Totally agree with you about Walking on Air and the Bloodshy track. I mentioned twice the amazing talk box effect post-bridge. Wish it happened more on the album and more pop albums in general. Love it on Ke$ha's "Warrior." The Bloodshy track is so trite and fluffy. Nothing interesting about it except maybe the formant shift vocals in the bridge. Even though it was done best on the stuff they did for Sky Ferreira (Haters Anonymous). Walking on Air is a great tune but could've used a hell of a lot better vocal production - I think that's the biggest thing I notice. the sample is a little lazy, and the drop could've been more powerful.
love the adlibs at the end of Legendary Lovers - that track might be the best on the whole album I really think. Ghost has a great melody and her vocals really 'fit' the melody at those lines: "There's just an echo where your heart used to be...etc" and the vibrato on
vision's in the "my vision's 20/20" line.
Spiritual and Double Rainbow have grown on me. I think This Moment is pretty darn corny. I would think with Benny Blanco's involvement, the songs would've been crisp and catchy as hell. But maybe Stargate fucks that classic Benny sound up, since they seem to be a pair nowadays (Diamonds). the album as a whole is a superb pop album though. when Roar comes up I remember how well produced that song is as well.
there was a huge article about katy and her album and about max in our local newspaper last week. she will be coming to sweden too next year and doing her tour.

Reminds me: I still need to get The New Yorker :o
when katy was in stockholm she met robyn. these two was touring around two years ago and got to know eachother.
she especially praised max martin in the interview... he always does the best
and they will continue to cooperate as far as i know and read
they made half of prism in stockholm, the rest in santa barbara
actually the song by the grace of god is about her partner and comedian russel brand.
oddly enough, i went to the same school with one of the producers who made teaser trailers for roar by katy perry. didnt know it was him
Legendary Lovers:
Katy's "drum" delay after the mid-8 is slightly off-beat!

Legendary Lovers:
Katy's "drum" delay after the mid-8 is slightly off-beat!
She probably recorded that part without the drum track, it gives it a more humanizing effect. Boy, you're really looking into it.
These are things that are annoying me! No matter what's the reason for the fact that it's offbeat, they could've fixed it!!!
Also the beat fade-out in TIHWD is way too fast. That way it's obvious it'll come back.
On the off-beat delay I'm pretty sure they intended for it to be that way, because the other way more often than not, sounds too generic. This way sounds more live. Maybe you should open your mind a bit.
And about the "clicks" again, it is a gated vinyl effect, the reason you hear it after the hit is because the release is slower. I don't think any of the things you're bringing up are blatant technical mistakes, I think they're just part of the song as it is. It doesn't make the listening experience lesser, unless you're trying to look for something wrong in each song and don't focus on what matters most.
As for the This is how we do fade out, I kinda agree that the whole execution of "bring the beat back" could've been better and more original. Like the Stop! remix for Britney's "Crazy" :p

You never said the word "mistakes", but you did say that you'd wish they could "fix" the things you "find" annoying. Anyways, I just think that your remarks are pretty trivial about some of the things that you hear from their songs like many aspiring producers who look up to top producers.
And I'm not trying to offend you or anything, I just think that it's better to focus on more important details when you have an amazing set of ears. :)
Well, I understand what Benny tried to say.
Obviously, these things are intentional, but it depends of your aesthethics as well.
I also find strange and I don't feel some of these stuff but it doesn't bother me that much either...
@melodicmoonlight: we were never expecting this effect so it came out of nowhere and we were blown away by the talk box. But if it was a second time on this album I would think: oh ok, this effect again! I mean Max, Luke and Cirk have so many signature sounds they use loads of times on one album so it's freshening when they use a new element only once per album.
@j_a24: for me the off beat delay takes the song's momentum. That's why it's annoying me that much.
Of course I could say "Wow Max, Luke and Cirk are so great and I still love their songs" but I think that's obvious and then we had nothing to talk about so I throw in the details I've noticed. I wanna see if you hear them as well, what you think about it etc. That way we get to know each other's appreciation of music. It's so amazing we all are here in this forum to talk about things we have no one in real life for.
And if I talk here about things that are annoying me it doesn't mean I'm not focusing on other things. My "top 10 prism-moments" will come!

Sorry I'm a bit behind the times, but I just checked this out, and I can hear the clicks loud and clear on the official lyric video. It's definitely louder than the vinyl crackle in there. It doesn't sound like they intended it to fade because it's so deliberate and cuts off in time, but whether the click is also intentional who knows. I'm going to go with saying it's intentional just so it doesn't make me think any less of the song, which sounds silly I know! :D There are definitely songs out there with edit mistakes in them, I can think of two past singles off the top of my head, but never have I noticed anything in something Max has worked on.
I only just bought my copy the other day, I am really enjoying it so far!
My favourites:
Birthday (sounds a bit Janet Jackson to me)
This is How We Do
International Smile
Dark Horse
Roar
George, I agree, I think Prism will do better than Teenage Dream!
I'll never get how people can name TIHWD as one of their favorite songs from prism ???
Ghost sounds so like Jessie J's Gold. Especially the last part of the song, same melody as the Gold chorus.
so much hype about this album lol..

I'm not sure which is my favourite track off the album yet, there are a few I really like so I'll give it a week and then decide! One thing that doesn't sit quite right with me yet is the choice of "Unconditional" for the second single. I like it, just don't love it. A grower maybe. Katy performed it on X Factor here in Australia last night, clicks and all! :D
Josh I have the feeling you mean the "snare click", not the click we talked about.

I've been listening that Ultimate Fans Collection and sometimes I'm freaked out about the digital remastering and how loud it sounds... Loudness War.
And the award for most hilariously clueless Tweet of the year goes to this random one I saw today..... :D :D
I must say. I've never been here for Ms. @katyperry, but I'm kinda digging her new album. Glad she found a way to survive without Dr. Luke.
His name is gay porn fanatic and he likes to post cocks .... I guess that says it all.
EDIT I just enlightened him successfully
I think we should do a favourite song voting. Anybody, open a poll please :D
To me, Legendary Lovers by far.
I: Roar > International Smile > Legendary Lovers > Dark Horse > Birthday > Unconditionally
II: It Takes Two > Walking On Air > Choose Your Battles
III: Love Me > Ghost > Double Rainbow > This Is How We Do > Spiritual > By The Grace Of God > This Moment
I actually like Ghost and This Moment. Love the 80's influence on This Moment and Ghost's chorus.
There aren't weak tracks on the album IMO. No track makes me say that it's horrible and I need to skip it. Maybe the verses of "Walking On Air" are not my cup of tea, but it's not enough to make me think it's actually a bad song.
i pretty much have no interest in Choose Your Battles. that's the weakest. then By the Grace of God after that.
Legendary Lovers has to be the best. then Roar, This is How We Do, International Smile, Birthday, Ghost, Unconditionally. Double Rainbow has a good melody and it's grown on me - along with Spiritual. This Moment and Love Me are fluff but light on the ears.
It Takes Two is ok but doesn't fit too much on the album... Walking on Air and Dark Horse are good but I sort of exclude them cuz they were two promo singles so I feel like I don't listen to them with the same ears as I do the rest of the record. Dark Horse is a cool production but also is an experimental sound compared to everything else.

I'm talking about the reversed sample that cuts off with a pop over top of the first kick after each snare. It alternates from left to centre in the mix.
Then we're talking the same :)
But we don't know if it's the end of the reversed sample :/
are we still talking about clicks?!! haha
Josh, I agree with you about Unconditionally being the second single, I like it but don't love it either
Yesterday morning Katy performed on our morning show "Sunrise" in Sydney, she was pretty fantastic, she performed Roar, California Girls/Teenage Dream, Firework, Unconditionally (probably some clicks)

Yeah I really wish "Dark Horse" had been more than just a radio/buzz single, now it'll probably never get an official single release. They've also been playing "Walking On Air" on the radio a fair bit.

how'd you filter that out so well?
But why is the vinyl crackle stereo all the time whereas the clicks are panned differently?
I'd really like to have a look into the session ...
Quote from: melodicmoonlight on October 30, 2013, 06:20:32 PM

It's just a high pass filter that cut all the way to 2.5Khz approx. :)
Here's a distorted version of it:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6hmtazou3q6xlbn/Clicks%20%28Overdrive%29.mp3
(Turn the volume down)***
And BSteady yeah they're definitely panned, and it can be for a number of reasons.
Either:
A)The vinyl crackle sample or effect is that way, some pops and clicks are panned randomly.
B)Like you said in the beginning, the snare sample was not faded properly at the end.
Who knows really. But if the snare sample was not faded out properly I think the click would've always been centered or panned left.
Yeah for me the panning is the evidence that it's intended!
And yeah of course it's a low cut but is it really just an equalizer? Can't believe the crackle is still so present up there

Yeah it's just ableton's auto filter. Luke and Benny do like their vinyl crackle lol. I don't think it was intended, it's just that kind of casualty that comes along the way you're programming drums. I don't think they put too much thought into it.

Unconditionally delivers so much stuff to talk about :D
Another thing I always wanted to tell you: first off the chorus is the most boring part of the song. Ok, the first chorus has that certain power but when you hear it after the second verse it gets a bit annoying. Therefore I don't like that it comes in after the mid-10 (instead of 8 lol ...) you know ... so much tension in the mid 8 and then that boring refrain is coming back.
Now imagine they would've put the last part of the song between mid-10 and last chorus ... That would've been so Cheiron-tastic <3
I get so euphoric when I imagine this. That song gets so wide open (wide open :D ) when that last part comes in. It would've fit so perfectly after the mid-10
hope you feel me :D xoxo

Ok, having listened to the intro now (original and J_A24's high pass) about twenty times with headphones, I'm feeling more and more confident it's the vinyl loop too. They're looping two separate bars of the crackle over and over, and you can hear some crackle sits in the middle, some of it's a bit wider. So my guess is the loop starts right on those particular "clicks" which they've just chopped roughly and then looped every two bars.

ah that sucks, I hear ya. I didn't go to the Virgin Megastore a lot in Times Sq but I remember being amazed at how huge it was - that's where I bought Katy's One of the Boys back in 2008, ha. lucky for me the Target at Atlantic Center isn't too far from me. that's where I got Prism and where I intend to get Artpop :p
at first I pre-ordered Artpop on Amazon but cancelled cuz it would've taken a week to get here apparently. Also, Target had the "limited edition" Prism digipak so I'm sure they'll carry the foil-front Artpop edition. cuz that's the one I want!

Yeah, Virgin was great!! It's just weird....I'm not at all opposed to getting stuff online, that can be great, but in some cases -- say you just really want a physical copy of something for some reason -- it's actually LESS convenient (and more expensive) than if you could just pop into a store and get it. Maybe eventually people will figure this out and the pendulum will swing back at least a little bit. I guess it really hit me too because this is the first physical CD I've wanted enough to buy in like 5 years. (Actually, first album of any kind, including download :-)

Damn! Katy would be happy to hear that.
Yeah I have this thing where I purchase the physical copies of the main pop girls. I continue to do it with Gaga, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Katy, and of course Britney. (Actually didn't buy The Fame come to think of it - but I pretty much started this practice in 08/09.) I guess because pop is my fav genre and it just feels
right having the music in CD quality and reading the booklet and seeing the pictures - the thing we'd do as kids buying CDs.
I hope one day online purchasing is a lot more convenient. But definitely being in the city, it should be easy to pop into a store and buy music or whatever.
I was about to settle for the standard edition when it was all I could find at our biggest cd store in the city, but then I asked and it turned out they had stacks of them up in front of the counters! Woo! Didn't want to miss out on the bonus tracks, let alone the seeds for the garden. Anyway, I enjoyed listening to this album so much on my way home tonight. Such good, honest, creative pop that has been taken seriously rather than for granted. No half baked electro club anthems just to fill another album, every track has it's place and has strong imagery that takes you on a bit of a trip, like a holiday. I dunno, it just feels like there's so much heart in these songs. "International Smile", "Birthday" and "Love Me" stand out as favourites so far, but I arrived home before getting to the end, so I'm saving the rest for a drive tomorrow.
That talk box solo on "International Smile" ..... (the 8 bar part that's like a real solo)........alot of chops on that, very well constructed solo -- think maybe it's Dr. Luke using guitar/talk box? Only one of those guys with that kind of instrumental solo experience, I think. Was hoping it'd be listed in liner notes, but it's not....

It could be programmed, but there are keyboard players who pull this kind of stuff off with ease. I'd say it's more likely keys than guitar. Yeah that one really fast scale-like part sounds pretty much identical to "Thinking Of You". Not sure if it was mentioned on this forum or somewhere else, but if you listen carefully to "Thinking Of You", you'll hear in the beginning of the talk box part the lyrics "suck my p***s"... I would never have known until someone said, now it sticks out (no pun intended) like nothing else! :D
Been listening to PRISM again tonight, and I hate to overreact to a new record and change my mind a week later, but I'm just about prepared to say this is the one of the best pop albums I've heard in the last decade. The best maybe? I don't know if I want to go that far yet, but it's up there. Listening from start to finish is a real experience, hopefully it will have longevity, which I guess is another big test after the excitement fades.

haha, and on the main lyrics I think she says "Suck my d**k", so that would make sense :D Yes, I know there's zillions of keyboard players who can do those solos, but on liner notes of PRISM it only lists Dr. Luke, Max and Cirkut as doing "ALL" playing/programming on "International Smile".....I'm almost certain neither Max or Luke plays piano with that facility (Luke does, of course with guitar) which leaves Cirkut, but I couldn't find any info on his keyboard background. That's why I'm wondering who did it....
I agree on PRISM......it's got a great collection of songs, but somehow the whole album has a unique texture to it that really has a unified sound/feel.......I hear it as colors.....it's so autumnal.....I could hear that even from the clips, which is why I wanted to buy it... and as for singles, I only have the standard version, but to me, the only songs on that couldn't be singles are "Love Me", "This MOment'' and "By the Grace of God"........."Double Rainbow" to me is a really great song, one of the best on there-- would be perfect as the last single.

The other possibility is that they did something inspired by Klas Ahlund on "Call Your Girlfriend" by Robyn.
He took a vocal part and chopped it, and did some pitching on Melodyne to build a solo part.

OK, good thanks-- that's what I'm trying to find out :-) So maybe they could also work out the part (vocally or using keyboard) at a much slower tempo and then speed it up, right? (cuz nobody can sing those lines at that speed). I'm talking only about the part that sounds like a synth solo....... see, I'm used to hearing solos like that by David Foster on lots of hits from the 80's, but he had the keyboard chops to play them himself on synth, that's why it caught my ear....for a great example, check out the solo at 2.59 sec on this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfZaHstPoqo Incredible the way it leads into the modulation!!!

Katy Perry's 'Prism' Ruled Potential Biohazard in Australia
I gave the seeds to my parents and the first thing they said was "I wonder if this is allowed in the country". I said I assumed they were locally sourced seeings the disc is Australian made. But Australian customs are very big on making sure no bio hazards enter the country, we have a whole reality show about it even!
My PRISM thoughts for the day:
Every time I listen to "This Moment", I think of Kelly Clarkson. It totally sounds like a song she'd do and seems a bit out of place on PRISM.
I wonder if "Spiritual" and "Choose Your Battles" were originally intended to be higher up the tracklist and included on the standard album, it would've made the whole feel a lot darker.
"Unconditionally" is a grower.
Some elements of the album remind me of where Luke and Ke$ha were going on "Warrior", making me think how much of a shame it is that it went mostly unnoticed.
It's just to gain some attention that thing about the seeds.
And I'm quite enjoying the first part of the album, I'm not feeling the second part... it's like, TOO corny.
You guys know what the bass line of "Roar" is based on, right? It's this beautiful song "Outro" by M83. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0hZL0u56Uw When "Roar" first came out, I read some articles somewhere that Katy likes them, and that one of the guys from M83 approached her at some music festival and said he wanted to write with her. Anyway, this song is pretty awesome. (So is "Roar' ;-)
PS....found the article http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1683359/katy-perry-m83.jhtml
Katy went to see M83 at Coachella maybe two years ago, and Antony saw her... and she tweeted praising Midnight City.
He offered on Twitter to produce some stuff for her... and he ended up producing the unreleased songs in The Killers Greatest Hits album out this week.
I quite like her because she's listening what's coming out and posting stuff.
She tweeted about Tegan and Sara's Closer and they became like a top 40 hit in the Hot 100 after that... and A-list celebrities started to tweet about them, though they're in the game for around 15 years...

I bought an M83 album two years ago ("Saturdays = Youth") without having heard of them before, I just thought the cover was brilliant and figured the music might be too. I'm so glad I got it, it's wonderful. So much atmosphere but with pop sensibilities throughout. I know hipsters are right into it but I see it more as dark pop. I'd love if Antony worked with her. Just imagine the abuse he'd get over it haha.

After my first week of playing PRISM I had two weeks where I literally couldn't stand to play it again.....like I OD'd on it or something.....just played it again tonight and....just what I thought that first week: PRISM is a GROOVE album!! So much great rhythmic stuff happening in it, so much BASS......and after two weeks away from it, the king of all the groove songs for me: "International Smile".......that thing is vicious!!
I feel the same way. I've been playing it almost constantly since I bought it. I absolutely love International Smile too! Even the song Walking on Air, which at first I thought was sort of ordinary, now I just love it!
Unconditionally (Official Instrumental)

I think "Walking on Air" would be a great choice. I probably love "Birthday" and "International Smile" more, but "Walking On Air" just gets in your head and it is totally radio friendly and such a nice song to listen to.
yeah, doesn't seem "Unconditionally" is doing as well as expected, only no.16 on Billboard, which is great, but not as good as Katy would normally do and "Roar" is still higher. I'm surprised it was even a single. I think Katy Perry should move on quickly to a third single.
The song is really good but I think people love Katy in general more when she is singing fun-songs.
But we don't have to worry, there are enough song worth to be released as a single on that album. :D
I think the next single will be and uptempo song, but I don't know which one.
Maybe Birthday or This is How We Do.
And Legendary Lovers SCREAMS #1.
I remember when the maroon 5 song's one more night had been realised .....not been initially a great success because payphone was still very strong in radio and sales.
Then we know how it went ....

I would totally support Walking on Air if they remix a version for the radio.
"Dark Horse" will be the new single. Don't know if it is a good choice as it has been a buzz-single before the release.
But of course it's a great song and a big contrast to "Unconditionally"
Great choice , it had to be single.
No a bad choice, I think that "Birthday" would've made a perfect single for the holiday season.
Gotta see this to believe it, although you can't really tell from the audio where the problem was......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sprOaNtne3g ps...this is only version left up showing the full performance which was stopped by the host, asking her to start again.....seems like they're trying everything to get rid of the evidence of this debacle.....
To be fair, here's the statement from NRJ
"Katy Perry was singing live at the NRJ Awards Saturday night in Cannes, but regrettably the wrong mix has been played accidentally which over-rode Katy's live vocal feed on-air at the beginning of her performance of 'Roar'," NRJ stated.

It's not a surprise that Katy lip synced, heaps of pop stars do, but the singer needs to own it and not blame someone else. Obviously NRJ were totally bullied into issuing this apology. Katy would have been better to admit to it and move on.
And that live performance is to prove she sings live as well.

what a disgusting review
""Roar" has five songwriters, all of whom bring a substantial amount of mainstream clout to the table, and two of whom are probably the most successful pop songwriters of the past decade. The first, Max Martin, has a penchant for writing the biggest hits—and worst songs—on big albums by the likes of Taylor Swift and Pink. The second, "Dr." Lukasz Gottwald, has a history of "writing" songs plagued by accusations of blatant plagiarism. By all accounts, Dr. Luke is a bottom-feeding, opportunistic hack who gets away with stealing other peoples' songs because he files defamation lawsuits the second anyone accuses him of wrongdoing. It's hardly surprising that Bareilles shrugged off the comparisons between her song and "Roar" earlier this summer, even though the similarities between the two were enough to fuel a perfect mash-up of Nickelback proportions. No one wants to deal with a lawsuit from the richest songwriter in Hollywood, even if that songwriter is getting away with turning your modest, Top 40 hit into a global number one smash."

Yeah it's a pretty pointless review. I guess a site called Absolute Punk could never be seen as pro mainstream pop even if they wanted to. Also, the whole Bareilles thing never would've gone anywhere, staccato piano chords don't really belong to anyone.

No, no, pleeeeease noooooo! I know "Unconditionally" hasn't done so well, but I hope they haven't seen the success of "Timber" as reason for this. Maybe because it's been a radio single already (along with "Walking On Air" over here), they need something to get people buying a second time. I seriously hope this isn't the case though. Juicy J's part is perfectly dark, it matches the track, I can't imagine Pitpull coming close to pulling it off. Like you guys I originally only found the chorus likeable, but eventually I came to love every second of it. I couldn't work out why they originally passed on a proper release of this. I'm seriously hoping "Birthday" is in consideration after this.

US iTunes #1.
So after Timber, Dr Luke gets his new #1 soonish for sure.
It was wrong to release it as a buzz-single though. One buzz-single "Walking on air" would have been enough. Many have purchased "Dark horse" already I guess and can't buy it again now - I guess.

I thought that song in particular was written first and then arranged.
Seems like Katy & Bonnie receive some tracks by Luke/Max/Cirkut and write a hit single over it, having an amazing produced track first, making it easier to write a hit song.
I think she does write lyrics/melodies first on midtempos and ballads.

What is illuminati about that video? There's nothing more than ancient egyptian symbolism and a reference of Cleopatra's character.
I'm more concerned over how music videos objectify both genders.
I have no idea if there's an Illuminati or not, but one thing's for sure.....if there isn't, then alot of video directors/pop stars must have the creativity of sheep, because they use the same s**t (symbols) over and OVER again. I mean, it's undeniable -- the way Vigilant Citizen breaks down these videos, it's no coincidence......
Not a bad video but she's done better.
The whole Egyptian thing does not work well with her and people are comparing it to MJ's Remember The Time.
Her actual campaing just shows how insecure she is to go further than the Teenage Dream era.
Besides, too much pink everywhere.
feel like this music video/song could of been so much better if Juicy J wasn't it, I'm not hating just didn't like the hip hop/gangsta feel of Ancient Egypt. I think Katy Perry was capable of making an amazing video and song without the help of a rapper just saying, in my opinion.

It's like the whole y2k, 2012 thing...it's fear mongering and it creates a base for people to consume out of fear. The real enemy is not some sort of satanic hidden group, it's the corporations who want to dumb you down so that you buy more meaningless stuff.

Right........don't think --as long as something is popular it must be OK.
The video is pretty average, I think Katy's worst. The first thing I thought of was MJ's Remember The Time.
I don't know why she went with the Egyptian theme, I liked the spooky theme she did at The Grammy's better.
I don't understand anything about the illuminati.
The whole illuminati hype is like a fashion thing right now. It's a couple of symbols - nothing more, nothing less. There's NOTHING behind it.
I just can't take people seriously who get all serious and/or upset about it. lol
But that's the whole point I guess, to catch people's attention - and that's what they do, very successfully! It's all about sales. ;)

Miley Cyrus and Rihanna can take a deep breath, because controversy that often follows them has taken a turn and is now cracking down on Katy Perry.
The "I Kissed a Girl" singer's latest single, "Dark Horse," is sparking harsh reactions from the international Muslim community for disrespecting a symbol representing their God, Allah.
A petition launched Tuesday on Change.org is urging supporters of Islam as well as other religions, to ask YouTube to remove the "blasphemous" music video. Thus far, the petition has received 35,000 signatures.
Perry portrays an animated representation of Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, and she is seen using her powers to destroy those who oppose her. One character in the video is seen wearing a religious symbol around his neck, who she then zaps into a pile of sand, along with his pendant.
"At 01:15 into the video Dark Horse; a man is shown being burned, whilst wearing a pendant (also burned) forming the word 'Allah', which is the Arabic word for God," says the online petition.
Nida Ahmed of the United Kingdom signed the petition saying, "We are Muslims and that is Allah's name on his neck and she burns it that's great disrespect to Islam."
Also from the UK, Bilal Khan wrote, "Absolutely Disgusted at the music industry for allowing this to happen, music should be about spreading love not hate."
Ayaan Mire of Sweden said, "This video is offensive to the Muslims and I hope YouTube will remove the video."
The video, released on Katy Perry's official VEVO YouTube channel on February 20, has nearly 30 million views.

Good luck with your computer after that one!

So I'm in the supermarket today and the radio's on, and I think "Oh, that's the verse of "Roar", but someone's doing a cover version of it"...then I listen some more.....ooops, no it's "Ho Hey" by the Lumineers.....huh?? It's like for "Roar" they took the first verse phrase of "Ho Hey" but repeated it twice, then took the second verse phrase of "Ho Hey" and repeated THAT twice, and voila........."Roar" verse! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvCBSSwgtg4 (and added the little "Hey"!)

No way. I love Max & Luke, but they know exactly how far to take it without outright copyright infringement. I mean, "Since U Been Gone" instru bridge is almost (but not QUITE) identical to a song by the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" right down to the guitar tone and drums, so they've been doing this stuff since the very beginning.........

This ripping off stuff has always been a part of the real world of hit songwriting world though.....it's funny that the PopJustice editor recently tweeted about a BBC documentary he saw about Neil Sedaka.......in the tweet he said he was basically the Dr. Luke of his day. He meant that as a compliment, but check out this description of how Sedaka and his partner would stitch their hits together out of current hits they studied. Sound familiar? :-D http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=3989

I've always wondered if the two note chorus melody hook of "Roar" ('TI-ger' 'FIGH-ter' 'FI-re', etc) came from the verse hook of this song

A lot of rock records sounded like this before they wrote "Since U Been Gone", they just took the idea of it and made a huge pop song. That's what they do.

1. Open your browser window.
2. Type in: "http://", followed by "www1.".
3. Then add the word "zippyshare", but replace the * by the letter "i" and end it by a dot and the word "com".
4. Now you enter a slash "/", the letter "v" and another slash "/".
5. In the end of the line, you enter the code "42899429".
6. End the combination by adding the phrase "/file.html" to the URL.
7. Press ENTER and you shall receive! :P

I'm scared at how fast she's releasing singles, i find it the only reason why Birthday flop, hope it won't happen the same with TIHWD!
Birthday flopped? What?
#17 in the Hot 100 is not what people expect for someone like her.
I guess they wanted Birthday to be the summer song of 2014, but the video wasn't the best way to achieve it.
Plus, her high standards.
The whole campaign has been quite messy.
Birthday and Unconditionally are considered flops since they didn't break the Top Ten.
This Is How We Do is a good song, but I don't see it as a hit contender.
Time for a music shift, some new producers and sounds.

I was hoping for a re-release as well... but the album didn't do that well so I guess she ends the tour and will work on her new album.
So I went to see Katy Perry on March 1st in Zurich. I have mixed feelings about this. The show was gigantic with moving (artificial) horses, a freakin' increadible stage with tons of moving parts and the final manadatory fireworks (including fire-alarm that went off with firefighters coming to the location which didn't matter as it was the last song) - crazy stuff. But in all of this madness, her voice - in my opinion - completely drowned. You simply just can't run around all the time, hop on stage, change dresses non-stop and still think your voice won't fail you.
Her voice pretty much just shone in one song: By the grace of god. Why? Because she only had a cello, acoustic guitar, piano and backing vocals around her. No glowing prisms, flying emoticon-balloons and whatnot. She handled that song really well. But for example Firework, was just horrible. The sick pyros made up for it.. but I had hoped for so much more regarding her voice. And they turned Wide Awake into a dance-song... WTF?
It was a Hollywood show - maybe even a musical. But to me it was not much of a concert. I still don't know what those two guys on played on their guitars. I really don't. The drummer had some work to do obviously, the dancers were okay and the two backing vocals were really good. And I finally fell in love with the song "E.T." what I had hated for so many years before.
The two-hour show was impressive, but Katy didn't convince me.
Charli XCX on the other hand, who warmed up the crowd before the show, was pretty darn awesome. She has a lot of punch. I had not known she wrote that song for Icona Pop. I think Charli XCX will be one to watch. To me she's a little too close visually to Gaga, but it remains to be seen if she can differentiate herself enough to stand out. Will be interesting to witness.
That's all. :)

The sick pyros made up for it.. but I had hoped for so much more regarding her voice. And they turned Wide Awake into a dance-song... WTF? yes, biggest let down of the evening besides the fact she performed This Moment (her worst song ever) :D also her fans obviously are not able to appreciate "this moment" as they're non stop taking photos and videos and feel the need to share them during the show ::)

How far along are you on a new album?
I'm in the research and development phase. I've been going at it for eight or nine years in the spotlight, and then before that there's that decade of hustle that never gets recognized but still shows up in your wrinkles. So right now I'm taking a little time. I don't want to jump on any trends. I just need to evolve.
I do my records in a more traditional way, where the cycle is three years, so that once I start writing them, I know exactly where I'll be in spring of 2018. That can get a little bit like "Ugh." I need a little bit more freedom, especially when I've been doing it for this long.
Who are you rooting for at the Grammys?
The Weeknd has come a long way, especially since the very beginning when he put out all those records himself. He took a chance and went a little bit more pop. To see that growth happen so quickly and knowing his evolution is a pretty cool story.
What else are you listening to lately?
I love Tame Impala so much. I love Purity Ring, I love Years and Years, I love the Jamie xx record from last year. Caribou, Rationale. I can't wait for the new Rhye record. I love the "Magnets" song [by Disclosure] with Lorde.

Yes it's good that she's looking for new influences, I think she's always a good knack for what's going on out there.

You can tell, actually.
And her connections, of course... "Hey Katy, listen to this project I'm working on..."

Oh, Shellback is in now too?
I guess we won't have Luke back on that album?
First time shellback + katy, this will be interesting
I'm really excited about Max, Shellback and Katy! though I would love Max, Luke and Katy too.
