Anyone have this sample? The waow bass used in Britney Drive Me Crazy and Backstreet Boys Larger Than Life?

It's for a recreation of Britney Spears Drive me Crazy.

I've read the other threads here, and someone uploaded it a few years back to zippy http://www.swedishsongs.de/smf/index.php?topic=2670.15
but the link has since expired.

Snipes3000

Have you already found other suitable samples for your remake?
Hi, I'm Luke and I'm sitting on my throne! Oh, and have you noticed that Denniz PoP songs are extremely hooky?

fhill2

Hi @Snipes3000 thank you for the reply! I've actually learnt a lot from reading through your posts here.

Where I'm at with Britney Spears - Drive Me Crazy:

Strings
Stringwheel Pad - Matrix Strings from Roland JV-1080 vst (your suggestion)
I believe there is another string patch layered on top of it.

Bells & Organ patch primarily in the chorus sound the same as the sounds used in Baby One More Time Multitrack.
Haven't managed to find the presets for them yet but I have heard something like it going through the presets in the Roland JV-1080 vst.

Bass/Sub
Big Basic - Emulator X (I don't think this is right, but I'm not too concerned if I don't have the right patch, as I can use Serum to recreate it and get away with a similar sound for sub)

Melodic Stab Layers
Organ - Happy 60s Roland JV-1080 vst (there is definitely an organ in the stab layers). Trying the Korg m1 organs here too.
M1 Piano16 or PianoSplit for attack with processing
Guitar - Can't tell if the mid range layer of the stab is the same guitar sound that runs throughout the track, or a rave synthy type sample (maybe from AKAI sample CDs or their most used synths?). Recording a session guitarist tomorrow so we'll see!

Orch Hits
Using the layers suggested in the Max Martin Stabs thread.

Drums
Downtown Beats & a few hats from AKAI sample libraries.

___
Referencing the sides or mids of the mix only, while using an analyzer is helping me place and identify the patches & samples

So that's where I'm at right now! Please do correct if I'm missing something, would love to hear your suggestions.

No one actually shared the real deal.

Hi Fhill, glad that you learnt a lot from my posts.

-Concerning the strings, indeed I mentioned it is Oberheim Matrix-12 Strings. Someone mentioned that it came from vintage keys pro preset 15 or something. But I do recommend using Gforce VSM for these strings because they have a very good quality compared to what comes out of JV1080 vst or the EMU-lator EMUlator plugin (PM if you want the EMU-lator and I direct you to the download link, as it is no longer officialy accesable). The other point you might have missed is that it should be layered with the Hammond C3 organ (hence the preset is called M12/C3). I've never specialised in different organ sounds, so I can't really give you a picky advice but there are plenty of organ sounds and I'm sure some company has state of the art samples from a Hammond C3. So if you find the hammond samples + an emulation vst of matrix-12 or even oberheim x8 can do as they aren't really that different. Then use some lo-fi plugin or something (and try out u-he satin for 90's gear replicate) and work your way towards the character of the sound you are looking for.

-http://www.vintagesynth.com/ Here you can read a lot about synths and romplers. This is very handy when you are studying what gear cheiron had and to determine what function it had in their studio.

-There is a cheiron equipmentlist on this forum. you probably already saw it, but if not check it out. They had a yamaha dx7, which is a pain in the a$$ synth to program. it is very likely that cheiron merely used the presets of that synth. It is known for bells. The bells max used on carolina liar show me what you're looking for were 4 or 8 layered samples of bells, chad wolf said in a podcast with Lesley Roy. Bells are everywhere but especially FM/PM synths were known for it and the bells on romplers for a fair share should probably come from the DX7 but also a LAS synth like the Roland D-50. My favorite FM to replace DX7 hardware is u-he Bazile, it just sounds like magic and it is my overall sweetest synth, and Omnisphere 2 is the best replacement for D-50 (made by the same person eric persing)

-Concerning the sub. When you talk sub I think about 0hz to about 100hz. When you have a bass to fill the sub I would use a sine wave in most cases and layer it with something wide above 100hz. Serum will do, it's a very consistent sub in volume (the danger is that some subs get weaker at certain notes and thus the sub looses power but serum doesnt do that).

-Thank you for your transparancy on how you approached the 'Cheiron sound' problem. Check out the manual of the EMu AUdity 2000 and see if you can find your preset there http://www.synthmanuals.com/manuals/emu/audity_2000/operations_manual/audity_2000.pdf. From there it might be able to know what was the original souce of the sample used by the Audity 2000.

@Snipes3000 thankyou for this very valuable information & pointing me in the right direction.

I did take a look at that equipment list, it's very helpful to know the synths they used to know I'm looking where I need to be.

I have EmulatorX and Emulator VX atm, managed to get the links from Archive.org thankfully. With this I'm able to sample the sounds out from the VSTs before the session crashes or the vst UI stops working, this plugin really doesn't like windows 10. I have no problem sampling it this way though so all is good.

This is what i'll be trying per your advice:
Gforce VSM for the oberheim/matrix string combined with U-he Satin.
Hunting down some sweet sounding hammond C3 organ samples from various sources.
Bells from yamaha dx7 or Roland D-50, trying u-he bazile first and Omnisphere 2.

That was the idea I had for the sub. 2 layers, 1 for 0-100hz and 1 for midrange. I agree, serum does produce very consistent subs.

& thank you for the link to the audity 2000 manual. Don't know why I didn't check this first. Funny that N33 preset isn't listed in the original patch list.

I'll hopefully have some findings/improvements to show at the end of this week, and then I'll post some audio demos.

Download a good version of the emulatorX here: https://peeplink.in/c2977ad7f6e9. Bad workflow but once you got it, you can go through presets relatively quick, and it's a gold mine imo because of its huge amount of presets and its lofi character.

Yes, Gforce VSM oberheim strings + hammond C3 + lo-fi plugin (e.g. RC-20 or Saturn2) + satin for final touches (it's barely noticable and not a necessity).
Arturia also released a vst of DX7 with presets inspired by the original device and Roland has released a vst of D-50. Oh and there is also Matrix12 by arturia now. Lately companies are emulating Oberheim synths. So there should be some extra options there now I think.
Also check out new roland synth ZENOLOGY. It's a huge treasure because it has so many presets that are based on vintage hardware.

A bass with a layer for sub and a layer for above sub could be too thin (use ears). Don't be afraid to add one or more layers above 100hz, for example having one fully stereo and another fully mono. It creates an illusion of width. But dont add layers in your 20-65 hz region. I'll have a listen to your demo once you post it.

Sorry I forgot one important fact. Speaking of the sub, Cheiron used the Studio Electronics SE-1 for sub bass. Consider it as a cheap minimoog. Important is that it only has square, triangle and saw waves. The triangle is most suitable for a solid sub. You could use a minimoog emulation to replicate it, yet I'm certain the romplers also have moog or even SE-1 triangle sub bass in there. I personally use Diva minimoog mono template with a triangle wave and play with the filter settings and feedback knob to give it some extra harmonics because I know the moog is better than se-1.

And this comes from a shellback interview on pink's raise your glass:
Track 36-38 Bass
- The first is a synth bass, Yamaha cs-01 which is turned all the down below 200 hertz to get that twisted sound. Then comes a Studio Electronics SE01. Ilbert usually complains about it: "Use a real Moog instead". It has the right bass. As I understand it's a heritage from Denniz Pop. He always used the SE01'en as bass. Then it's a live bass, Rickenbacker 4001, played through AmpFarm. All bass tracks doubles each other.

Michael Ilbert is a gear specialist who came into the Maritone camp primarily as a sound engineer around 2005, as Max noticed how knowledgeable he was about gear.

N33 preset isn't listed in the original patch list.

Probably N stands for number. It has 4 banks and these are the presets

33. wav:Trumpet2000
33. org:70's Jazzup
33. bas:Suschi Bass
33. vox:DreamVoxx

The last 2 could be the patch names...idk..

Anyway I use to work a lot with roland VST and everyday I find something new. Most of the bells used for the chorus melody comes from there. Same with the organ used in most part of their production. As for the stabs is still unknows what they really used but each stab is different and most of the times are layered always different brass stabs.

For the piano attacks (the Oops I Did It Again intro) they used to layer 3/2 pianos, synth/guitar and the talkbox used on Larger than life intro (but u can hear that basically in every cheiron production from '99/2000).

The Overprotected stab is available in the Roland SRX Dance Trax "HIT in face".

Also, if you want the literal drum loop for Crazy it is in Ueberschall Essentials of the Order library. There are also a few others in there you might recognize from Backstreet & Nsync.
