So this week Ellie Goulding performed her single "Anything Could Happen" on The X-Factor here in Australia, and though I'd heard it a few times before, her performance was so infectious that I had to take a gamble and get her new album "Halcyon". I'm glad I did, so glad! It's a really well written and produced album from start to finish. I figured it would be along the lines of alternative pop which would normally make me a little hesitant, but the melodies, the hooks and especially the electro style production are all epic. Some songs are instant goosebump material, others have grown on me over the past few days.
Here are some preview clips of my two favourite tracks "Figure 8" and "My Blood". Check 'em out!

I love this song!
And believe it or not: it's NOT produced by StarGate ???
Great copy by Ryan Tedder and Greg Kurstin tho.
I think her A&R did a terrible job recording this song: sounds kinda dated and it doesn't fit with her.
This one should have been recorded by Jordin Sparks instead of Leona Lewis and Ellie Goulding.
Have you heard the Leona Lewis version with no Greg Kurstin involvement? I think Greg just co-produced it.
I love this song , it's very poppy.
Yeah I agree that it doesn't necessarily fit Ellie style wise. I guess that's why it ended up being a bonus track, or was it recorded after the album was finished? Anyway, I do think it's a good song, and I'm not usually a big fan of Ryan's work. I must check out Leona's version.
New Album is called Halcyon Days
One song has my attention especially.
Under Control
Ellie Goulding, Oliver Goldstein, Bonnie McKee & Cory Nitta

Under control sounds pretty good, love those electro-ballads. Sounds like Oliver/Billboard.

This is just a re-issue of Halcyon, but it contains enough new bonus tracks to almost warrant it being a new album! :)

I'm lovin' the production on the second song!
Top 10 in our iTunes charts with the single. Good single choice.
What a weak album!!!
Just heard the full version of "Under Control". One of Ellie's best.

They're about the only two tracks she's released that sound out of place with everything else she's done... they're more mainstream pop.

Yeah that's what I was getting at! :D Her usual songs are a bit too alternative to be appreciated by us pop fans, even my favourites on the original album where the more poppy tracks. But I still think it's written very solidly, it's just not meant to be chart topping pop.
I think she should stay alternative, not going pop.

this song is now available for free on amazon :)
So I downloaded Under Control for free, bought the first two songs (they are great!) and Burn. I've already got Lights. Unfortunately I didn't like more songs of that album :(
Meanwhile I really like Under Control! Great free download :)
Just discovered Burn. Only listened to snippets before. And it is really tricky and cool. Ryan Tedder delivers hits since such a long time now. Not in Max standards but still a good competitor.

Ryan told a story on an interview in which Max called him to tell him that Halo by Beyonce was his favorite song that year and that he wish he would've written it. But yeah, melodically wise, it doesn't even compare.
Oh, cool detail.
"How long will" reminds me of the Dutch singer Do, if anyone knows her.
She was the singer of Heaven (cover) by DJ Sammy.

Halo is an amazing song, in every way. And Beyoncé really delivers it, she did a great job taking to a next level vocally.
I think I would die instantly if Max calls me.

Imagine if he rang to let you know he thought your song was the worst of the year!

Can anyone be so mean and do something like that? :)
The swedes are TOO polite, almost boring.
Meanwhile I like the whole album ( as always :D )
Bought the deluxe re issue ( 28 songs for 10 € 8) )
This album is just like an own world with an unique atmosphere where you can lose yourself :)

Nice to see it grew on you. I've only got the original release, but I know what you mean by it having a unique atmosphere. When I bought it I was on a bit of a downer, and I think that made me appreciate it so much more.
Did you like the new songs?
I don't get Burn, but I love that Greg Kurstin' produced song so much...
Burn and Hearts Without Chains (Fraser T. Smith) are the outstanding tracks from the whole Halcyon Days album but apart from that the CD1 songs are the better ones, especially the first two songs!!!
Btw Burn is produced by Greg Kurstin too!? And for some reason his name is even on the back cover :o "Burn - produced by Greg Kurstin". I don't know why but he's the only producer who is mentioned on the back cover.

I don't like Ellie going too pop. And the song I love is Goodness Gracious, those synths!
I don't like Fraser T. Smith that much, he did an amazing job on Adele's 21 and Clare Maguire debut, but he doesn't have high standards, it's like one great song and four average ones.
I loved the work of Mima Stilwell and Jim Eliot on Halcyon: My Blood and Only You are amazing and Anything Could Happen is a grower for sure. They also worked with Will Young and Kylie Minogue on a couple a really good tracks.
Greg Kurstin is the protegeé of the A&R head of a big label, I'm not really sure if Greg Wells is that person.
So that's the reason Greg Kurstin is producing so much stuff with A-list US artists since 2011: Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Ke$ha, Devo, Foster The People, Katy Perry, Tegan & Sara...
His production style fits with the current pop/rock sound, so he's producing a lot of stuff nowadays.
Haven't heard of Jim Eliot before this album but he did an amazing on Halcyon Days! He's got a very unique sound!

He wrote and produced Two Hearts and All the Lovers by Kylie Minogue along her wife Jemima.
And they also work together as a band, their name is Kish Mauve and they're amazing: one of Kish Mauve's song -Come On- ended up being the second single of Will Young's Echoes and lead them to write almost half of the album, which was produced by Richard X and Pascal Gabriel.

I wouldn't mind if Kylie had a wife actually.

How Long Will I Love You is the "Official BBC Children in Need" song!
And already #1 in the UK itunes. I love this song.
She gets #1 via branding syncs... that's not good.
Two things: Ellie released the video for the new single Goodness Gracious, produced by Greg Kurstin.
I'm not really feeling the "Hollywood Ellie" but I understand she wants to be a popstar and get more recognition.
Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekPBOVgGRSA
And she's confirmed to Lollapalooza Santiago 2014, a big festival I've been working since 2011.
I'm anticipating to get to know her and maybe be her person in charge while she's in Santiago, it would be great!
