QuoteNumber-one singles
The following singles co-written by Bonnie McKee have reached a #1 chart position in North America and/or the United Kingdom
"California Gurls"
"Teenage Dream"
"Hold It Against Me"
"Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
"Part of Me"
"Dynamite"
"Wide Awake"
"How We Do (Party)"
Well even if she doesn't, I think she's the best lyricist out there now...."C'mon'' is latest example. I love "How We Do" (Rita Ora) lyrics too. She has a style....the only other pop lyricist I feel that way about is Billy Steinberg. (Ooops forgot......Gaga is good too! :-)
I can't see her as a popstar.
She is a brilliant songwriter though.
I agree, she is a fantastic lyricist. I look forward to seeing what she does. Hopefully she will work with Max and Luke.
Found this from Bonnie's twitter
Seen there Max plays a percussion and guitar , Dr. Luke plays a guitar and Bonnie gets a maracas. There is also a part that Max shouted.

HAHAHA, fun times by the looks of it, they've probably gone mad from a long day in the studio! What's up with Luke's elf hat?
Lol :D
Holy shit!! Max got old!! :o
Still a great video of course!! :D
But why are the cuts so weird???

Due to the voice people think Katy was in there as well. Could also be Bonnie herself ...
Dr. Luke tweeted about this song today, and I found this great live version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-pN4A93bwg
Best lyric of the year......"I was raised by a television" :D :D ps she plays piano great!
This is a great song. Especially when it comes to the lyrics.
"I wanna see all the stars and everything in between,
I wanna buy a new heart out of a vending machine"
Triple-rhyming along with words that really paint a picture, this is what makes a good song great in my book.
Awesome if Dr Luke is the producer, a song like this need a rock vibe to it.
The verse sounds a lot like the verse in Jesse's Girl

Yes, great lyrics :-) And the song has like two hook sections (besides the verse) before it even gets to the chorus! She really put this song across in that performance......you can tell it's a hit :-)
good song, I like the lyrics too. great that she can play the piano.
She released it today! A music video will a bunch of celebrity cameos. (Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Jewel, KISS, Becky G, Jason Derulo, Nicole Scherzinger, Adam Lambert, Carly Rae Jepsen, Maclemore, Kathy Griffin, Joan Rivers, etc) Sure to get the song/video/Bonnie great visibility.
The studio version rocks. An undeniable summer smash. Production (that infectious classic guitar riff), lyrics, harmonies, vocals all on POINT. Loving this...

Not bad, quite sweet, but I hope they have some better songs on the album. Especially some Max stuff.

which makes perfect sense considering she's written with/for them.
That chorus melody is very dope!!
I was really looking forward to this studio version, but I feel like the whole thing is pitched too high........vocal and instruments, almost like "The Chipmunks" lol .....to me it lacks punch...... LATER: listened a 3rd time, louder in my headphones...sounded better......maybe I miss hearing just a touch more low end in the instrumental......
Like it, but don't love it. This to me is the equivalent of Carly Rae Jepson's "This Kiss". It's nice, the elements are mostly there, but all in all it's too weak to really be the take off hit she's after.
The production is somewhat disappointing. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it just sounds exactly like any other Katy Perry style pop song out there. Even her voice sounds similar. If anyone has seen her youtube series "Breaking Bonnie", I find it interesting that every artist wants to do something really original, be outside the box or whatever, and when it comes down to it still sounds just like the rest of 'em. But maybe the album will be different?
I am however not sure about Bonnie's star quality as an artist. But best of luck to her! And the song is still awesome :)

knowing that she's written with Katy and Ke$ha, etc, it makes sense that she's gonna go after that similar guitar-driven pop sound. if anything, Teenage Dream (the popular singles) sounded like Bonnie. saying it sounds like a Katy Perry style pop song is sort of ironic - when Bonnie was part of crafting that very sound.
I feel like American Girl is very Bonnie-esque. That nostalgia, her vocal adlibs (that Katy doesn't do in her songs - those high notes and melismas), the lyrics, her general tone of voice.
Update for new album by Katy from her new Instagram. THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE SHE IS IN MAX MARTIN'S STUDIO IN STOCKHOLM! :)

You are right, but the pop crowd does not have this information. And they do not care for it, that is why there are so few users on this forum :) To the general population this will likely sound like a new Katy Perry single. If you create a sound that will prove to become popular and give it to an other artist, you have given it away. You cannot both have the cookie and eat it, as we say.

I totally agree. Having cameos is one thing, and I'm sure the idea was to introduce her as someone who's worked with all these amazing people... but they're just webcam/phone quality shots that look like they've been e-mailed in as a favours. It doesn't make for a well made video, and it ends up giving Bonnie a back seat to everyone she's written for, which has been her problem all along.
Completely changed my mind on this....I love it now, all of it, including that slightly sleazy synth melody in the bridge -- very 80's!!
I think I was just expecting this to be by Dr. Luke, and when it wasn't, I was disappointed, but this has some really good s**t in it, and I hope it catches on!!!

SYMONDS: Are you pretty good at predicting which songs you write for other people are going to end up being super successful?
MCKEE: Sometimes. It's funny—I work a lot with Max Martin and Dr. Luke. I remember the first time it happened was with "Teenage Dream," after we finished the song and vocals and listened back to it and Max Martin turned to me and said, "I wish I could bottle that feeling," and I was like, "What feeling?" because I've never had that feeling before. And he said, "When you know you wrote a hit." So I said, "Oh, is that what this feeling is?" [laughs] I have those feelings occasionally, but then there are other times where I write a song I'm so crazy about and love so much and it does nothing. I don't know if I have a great barometer for that, but the ones that are big, you feel when they happen.
SYMONDS: You've been working with Max Martin and Dr. Luke for four years. What are some of the best lessons you've learned from them?
MCKEE: Every time I write with them I learn something new. They are melody geniuses. I know this may sound like it becomes formulaic—in a lot of ways, pop music is formulaic, but they're like mad scientists. They've got it down to a mathematical equation, but they still somehow manage to write heartfelt, artistic pieces of music. It doesn't feel canned to me—it never does to me. There's something about their songs that always still strikes a cord and plucks at the heart's strings. It's very Warholian in a way, where it's mass-produced but it still makes people feel something.
Is this really true?
A mathematic formula?

I agree, considering the amount of awesome tracks she's worked on, this is the best she came up with for herself? It's just not strong enough. I'll be very surprised if this goes anywhere at all.
To me it's a bit of a mystery. Why didn't Luke and Max take the lead on her album? Did they think she could flop due her first effort when she was 16? I mean, if there's one person who has access to them, it's gotta be her. Why did she settle for anyone less than Max & Luke?
I totally love "American Girl", and yeah I think it would have been successful it was sung by Katy. What bugs me is that Bonnie doesn't have a unique recognition factor so far. But then again, there are many out there who don't have that and still are successful. I really really hope she can pull it off.
By the way... considering that the song is available for free, she can't show up in the charts anyway, right? I guess it's all just a promo track to establish her. Same goes for the clip with the cameos. That was just to get as much press as possible. She automatically reaches out to all the fanbases of all the artists who had a cameo, plus you get listed on all their fansites etc... Quite a good idea to get a lot of promo, particularly since she has all these guys'n'girls in her address book. :)
I hope she makes it.

I think maybe (?) they all had to be a little careful not to make her record sound EXACTLY like a Katy Perry record using her producers, but still not totally different.....so they used different guys. And now I actually like that it has a different sound to it, although it threw me on first listen. I'm really hoping it does well when it's released too :-)

in the best way possible - it's broad, simple, and memorable. California Gurls, was that basic? what would you rather have the song called? "Raised by a Television"?
I'm not sure if the song lyrics are meant to be ironic at how American girls are pretty much just puffs of air, specifically girls from California. But if it is, it's pretty clever.

I don't think this song is going to go anywhere. Not sure her career as an artist will either unfortunately. It's like someone has seen her potential to be like the artists she works with, and then pushed her career in that direction. But for me it comes across as "hey I can sound like Katy because I write Katy Perry songs" rather than an artist with something new to offer.
Well, actually it makes sense starting from the point that she co-writes these songs.
I think she's really talented, but if you want to be a global popstar you have to make that x factor that makes you likeable and pleasant to watch, and I don't think she have that factor.
There's A LOT of talented people that just don't click as popstars, and it's just OK. In those cases we just have to enjoy the music.
It must be hard -you know, EGO!- but I can see a bright future for her as a pop songwriter.
yeah, I agree, she should stay as a songwriter, not everyone can be a pop star. She doesn't have that star quality to me. The song is good, but her voice is ear piercing. And that video! ugh! put some clothes on! if she was trying to make a statement about something, then Pink did it better in Stupid Girls.

Still love the track.
There is also a interview.
Really would like to know how much input she had on all those songs. It's always like "her hits".
She's mainly the lyricist on all the songs she's been credited on, but she's a pretty good songwriter overall.
Bonnie singing all the songs shes co-written (mostly with Max or Dr. Luke)

I think this can be compared to Becky G feat. Cher Lloyd - Oath, they could be taken as the 10s Pop manifesto as they are actually Pop hit prototypes of our time but they just don't cut through. They're not copies in terms of music because here you got the original lyricist and in Oath you got Dr. Luke and Cirkut who are top class producers but something's missing anyway. It all really is about producing the perfect Pop track. Art is not perfect and after all the public is only attracted by art, they have to feel the passion in it... this is music for producers, I love it because I can study and see all the production techniques that those producers use more often, there's no risk in this production, nothing new, it's only damn working good but the public doesn't care about that. And that's where everything falls, this is music made with formulas, only formulas, without any artistic journey, that's the result, people just ignore it.
Anyway, I love it... 8)

And talks about Dr Luke and Max.

So great, thanks!! Love the part about "science" and "Warholian" and also her "tweaking" side, and her 10 year Christmas song project "I swear it's gonna be a masterpiece"....so funny :D

I kindda like it, but it sounds too much like a Ke$ha or Katy song. I guess is like an stigmata for all of her solo songs to be compared to what she's written before.
I love it. She clearly knows her stuff. She'd totally deserve success as an aritist and not "just" as a songwriter. But I have my doubts if she'll take off completely.
I love the song but I think she is a horrible performer! :-\
The song is fine as long as I don't watch her sing it. lol

Agreed, it's pretty awful, including that band "interplay" :-O But I love the song too, especially the bass part -- it's perfect....it goes up into the higher octave on a couple of notes at exactly the right spots.....gives it so much emotional impact.....
I think she's the type to be the singer of a band like Evanesence, something a little darker. She's not the pop girlie-type!! She's trying too hard.
Agree! That was not a good performance! and the song is boring to me. It's too young for her. She's way too mature for this sort of song.
Yes, if she was a lead singer of a proper band it would be much better.
Is her friends can't tell her the truth?

I also think she's trying too hard.
And she's more of a lyricist than a singer, she should be earning money from that and stop pretending she does have pop appeal.
i would laugh my friend off if next big thing is dr luke is going to become a gangsta rapper!

She writes good melodies, why does she work with lazy producers? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYgHiwTxe94
Funny, because that song is the complete opposite of what you said for me. I really like the production, the backing track but I can't hear the interesting melodies.
Well, this song is not the case, but in American Girl the production was pretty weak and generic, for example.
Actually, I think American Girl is a really good song but it doesn't suit her style.
And I wouldn't say that about producers, actually I think it's a direction problem.
That's why this is not working.
I didn't know she was released from her contract with Epic last year.
She released the new EP without a label. I had to support her and to buy it.
Believe me, after cowriting these huge global hit songs, she's not poor.

She's amazingly hot.
I'd suggest her to keep it as a songwriter or stop the full pop thing.
She's really into fashion and trends and she could do some things really interesting with her image: maybe to tone down her image and stop singing in a higher register.
Everything is so over the top and seems forced to me.
I'm excited about a the song she recorded with Major Lazer, for example.

I think the main audience is people under 30, or even less, so that's why they want to fit that age and not seem old for younger generation.

Bonnie being honest about her careeer.
In some ways, "Bombastic" takes me back to the raw sound of your debut LP from 2004.
You know, my first album is so painful for me to listen to.
Why is that?
I really can't even handle it. It just came from a really dark time in my life. It was also before I had been touched by any of the industry songwriting rules — I hadn't worked with Max Martin or Dr. Luke yet, so I didn't know the songwriting rules. It was just my raw teenage instinct, so there are a lot of mistakes on it. When I listen to it I'm like, "Why did I do it that way?", if I'd written now I would have done it so differently.

She's clear about her career though, good for her.
And I don't think her lyrics are weird, nonsense or teenage. Like everyone else, her craft have high and low points.
For example, I never liked I Don't Care -recorded by Cheryl Cole- and now I kind of like it.
I loved her point about songs you think could be smashes and ended up being nothing.

And there's other major labels that let artists release full-lengths with, in my opinion, a lot less momentum.
for example, Ciara's full length with Dr. Luke productions got released with little promo. Ryn Weaver, a brand new artist, had her LP released on Interscope. Even Hilary Duff finally got her album out.
I feel like Bonnie had it going after American Girl. It was a viral hit, I heard it in shopping stores, she did live performances. Epic is so shady. I really hope Bonnie signs with another major. She says in the interview that she's open to it... It's cool of her that she wanted to be independent so she could release music.
I'm really hoping she gets legal ownership over all those songs under Epic and doesn't have to re-record them.
