He really deserves "Song of the year" and "Record of the year"

Fantastic news!

He's up against Paul Epworth, John Hill, Jay Joyce and Greg Kurstin

I think Max has a really good chance!

Is this one of the categories they show on TV?

I really hope so.

I just noticed "Dark Horse" is also nominated and "My Everything" by Ariane Grande.

So Max has lots of moments to look forward and will hopefully attend.

No, he hasn't won a GRAMMY.  It would be nice to see him finally recognized for his hard work.  He has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the year award 7 times, one of those as a tie with Dr. Luke.  He was the first non-American to win this award from the American Society of Composers, Artists and Publishers in 1999.

Hopefully, he can go home with a GRAMMY this year.  :D

Max is so totally gonna win this year *  Not even close  between him and the competition  http://www.grammy.com/nominees?genre=25     Not only in quality, but also because the music biz knows where its money is  coming from right now: they will reward him :D

            * Unless of course the Grammys makes one of their Politically Correct, wimped-out,  "artsy"choices.......

I do hope Max wins as well!   "Shake It Off' has grown on me, anyone know what he contributed melodically to that song?  the verse and pre chorus sound very Max.

What good stuff has Greg Kurstin done this year?  Who's he worked with?   Some of the stuff he did with Pink and Kelly is really good.  And what I like about him is that he's not a Max/Luke
clone, he really has a very unique style.  He's Jazz trained.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Producer of the Year award goes to Paul Epworth for working with Paul McCartney. I imagine all the voters in the The Recording Academy love Paul McCartney and probably don't like pop music much.

Interesting Rebecca.  Though some of 80's and 70's McCartney has a certain pop quality that is not worlds apart from some of what Max has done.
"Figure Of Eight" from Flowers In The Dirt
"Press" from "Press To Play"
"Waterfalls" - the melody more than the arrangement

Ever hear those ?

Hi Roy, yes I see what you're saying and no I don't know those songs. I should have explained myself properly. I didn't mean it so much about the songs but about the artists that record Max's songs. Paul McCartney is a singer songwriter with a lot of credibility. Okay, sure Taylor Swift writes or co-writes her songs and Katy Perry also co-writes but they're not a Beatle. The voters won't be able to resist voting for the producer that worked with Paul McCartney.

I would love Max to win Producer of the Year award and I think he deserves it, I desperately want him to win, but I'm just not sure he will.

However, I just noticed that Paul Epworth won a the Producer of the Year award in 2011, so maybe he won't win it again, then again, if it's the same voters, they will vote for him again.

I don't think Paul Epworth wins this year, he won with Adele's 21.

I go for Max this year: he had lots of hits lately and Grammy's are about that.

It is a good year for him with huge mega worldwide hits, Bang Bang, Blank Space, Break Free, Dark Horse, Problem, Shake It Off, Unconditionally plus being the executive producer of 1989 Taylor Swift.  TS is now in the superstar stratosphere, she's huge. 1989 sold 3.66 million copies making it the #1 selling album in 2014.

Agree 100% Rebecca.  I saw a music critic on tv once saying that he thought Taylor Swift is a pretty good songwriter, but he didn't think she'd ever get credit for it because of her looks.  The old thing I guess about the beautiful woman who isn't taken seriously.  I guess our society hasn't made as much progress as we think on that.

Same basic thing with Max, so many of his great melodies are sung by beautiful women.

Taylor's a really talented songwriter and topliner.
Being a pop star make musicians lost their artistry, because pop music is 100% entertainment.

But, at the same time... for example, in small markets -like Chile, where I live- if you don't write your own songs and/or play an instrument, you'll never be taken seriously.

No one here lived by the time The Beatles were the biggest pop stars in the world, but sometimes I tend to think that must have been something like 1D nowadays.

And, about the thread, I pray for Max to win the award.
Title: Re: Max nominated as PRODUCER OF THE YEAR!

Spoiler: You guys will probably laugh and think i'm an idiot, but go ahead..This is just for pure entertainment (my analys of this "hit song").

Not a good way to begin forum posting i guess (My first post), but Max Martin totally lost it.
I listened to shake it off, just before one minute at 00:55 i have paused it, and began typing this message. I don't know if i want to continue listen, if i was an A&R i would say, write a better song.
If this is what is called a hit these days, it's really sad. Britney, Bsb, etc, those old songs had "that" factor, you hear it one time and you love it, they had a multiply of hooks in the songs ranging from The piano dam dam dam (Baby one more time), the wah guitars playing nice funky pentatonic guitar licks, the talkbox in Larger then Life, etc etc. Taylor Swift Shake it Off, what do we have here?. A lame uninspired drumbeat, and some ugly sampled orchestrainspired sounding synth thingies. The pad that comes in at 30seconds, what the heck is that, it's so low, you almost can't hear it, who mixed this? Really bad. The chorus begins, i feel absolutely nothing, NADA. No Max Martin greatness over this, AT ALL. In fact it doesn't even feel like a Chorus to me at all, really flat, almost nothing is added to the beat either, no fat synths in the bakground, no nothing.
To me it's not a hit song if you don't love it instant. I don't care if it's Max Martin or whoever, if it's a good song it is, but this is no way near a hit song. Yes you can argue "But Max Martin has 40000000000views on youtube, he's amazing people love the song" yupp, he is better 95% of the times, but with this song, no, i don't think so. Also may i add silly songs like "Gangnam Style" has more views and that's not a good song either. It's just silly. Also look at the thumbs down over 200 thousands!
I thought some years ago he made some good pink songs raise your glass forexample, a perfect radio song. Began Listening to the track again now, have looped it three four times, i still don't want to listen to this again. If this would have been released by a non-famous artist, wouldn't get a record deal.
Nope, don't like it. :-[
But i blame the music industry for this, Max Martin even said in a Swedish interview that made Denniz Pop a bit mad, that if you have the contacts, you can make whatever, it will be a hit..And it's probably true nowdays. It was the same with Daft Punks latest album. Number one hit with lucky? You kidding me? Compare it with their "real" hit songs, like One More Time or Around The World, or Digital Love or whatever that's so much better!! That's "real" hits. If i ask a random friend they all agree.
And no it's not because we are old and "don't get it", songs were better.
Sorry for being rude/angry/upset. Max Martin will probably win anyway, even tho the song sucks.

I think Shake It Off is a grower. It's not an exciting piece of music, but it's fun and catchy.
And that's what people expect from pop music: just have a good time, there are no more pretentions about it. That's it, plain and simple.

If you want to listen exciting music, you don't listen to Top 40 music.
There's a lot of interesting and amazing stuff -musically and lyrically-in the alternative/indie side.

Respect for posting this, andreas. Personally i didnt think the song was that exciting when i first heard it, but i think the way the lyrics and melody work together in the chorus is absolutely genius :)

I agree that "Shake It Off' is definitely a grower.  On first listen I was also very surprised that they chose it as the lead single.  But it seems to fit the overall idea that apparently that album has some kind of unusually high corporate/commercial or whatever support behind it.  More than Prism and definitely more than Teenage Dream at the time.  So that would that explain why some more mediocre songs would be allowed on it.

Someone here very eloquently said that if Teenage Dream was given this kind of hyper push by the
record companies that it would have reached "Sgt Pepper" Iconic Status by now.

Andreas, everyone is entitled to their opinion as music is subjective, obviously. I happen to think you are wrong, but I respect your well written opinion.  ;)

RE: the Grammy, I think his competition is huge this year and it's not as much of a sure thing as people would think. Greg Kurstin is one of the best and most highly respected producers working in the industry, as is Paul Epworth. I would not be shocked if either of them got it. Not really familiar with the other guys. That said, if this isn't the year for Max, it may never be. Hard to argue with his success!
Title: Re: Max nominated as PRODUCER OF THE YEAR!

John Hill worked with Shakira, Santigold, M.I.A., co-produced Rihanna's You Da One, Mayer Hawthorne latest album, some Birdy songs, Phantogram's Voices -one of my choices for album of the year-, Bleachers -Jack Antonoff's band-, and the critically acclaimed album by Tune-Yards.

Jay Joyce comes from other place: country, folk rock. He worked with Eric Church -who had a huge impact on country radio last year- or Little Big Town whom released a critically acclaimed album as well. He also produced the latest Cage The Elephant album, a very well reviewed one.

These dudes are all amazing and talented, but I think Max deserves the prize by far.

He's done great work.  "Blank Space" is my fav from 1989.   Does anyone know if the chorus tune is Max?  Or of a good source to find such things out?
It sounds like him, but I know Taylor does a lot of her top lines

Never Mind - Find my own answer out.  Turns out she actually has a clip of her own first version of the song on the Deluxe Edition of the album.

Has anything heard this?  Is the chorus in the demo similar to the final version?

It's getting closer.  Next Sunday is the big day.  Super Bowl half-time will be another time to see some of his work performed as Katy Perry will perform a few of her songs with the MM touch.  I recently read an article where she talks a bit about working with Max and Dr. Luke.  She said Max is 'king of melodies'.

As far as the voting process for the GRAMMY's, this video (two-part) gives a short overview of how the nomination/voting process takes place.
It's interesting what he says about how Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best New Artist should be determined.
http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy/awards/grammy-awards-voting-process
Max is included with Shake it Off in two categories, Song and Record of the Year.  I'm not so sure about a win in those categories.  We'll see.

8) Best of luck!

I know what you're saying.  There was a part of me when I saw his photos wondering if he felt happiness or a sense of relief. Probably both! Also when he was recognized by Enrique Iglesias as Producer of the Year, I wish he would have stood up.  His accomplishments are astonishing and he should be proud of his success.  I hope that the GRAMMY's can return to an awards show rather than having so many performances, quite a few of them were boring.  We want to see the winners of more than just the most popular categories.  It's not as special for all the awards that were presented across the street.

I'm sure MM is very happy.  Hopefully he can take a 'break' and rest.  He looked tired.   Here's another article I found in the Huffington Post that's worth reading.  http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/02/09/max-martin-grammy_n_6249984.html?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067

Sooooooo Happy that  a good guy wins.....     I wish Kanye West would be banned from entering the ceremony forever.

I'm curious on something though - and this is pure curiosity so please just info, please no critiques of my question :-)   I think part of why he won was "Dark Horse" and another tune from "Prism" ("Unconditionally" I think?)  -  I know none of us know for sure how much he produced those 2 and how much was Luke's contribution, but I guess the logic of the "grammys" was that Max had
those extra Ariana Grande, Taylor swift projects which pushed it over the cliff for him ?

Don't get me wrong I'm aware that Max's talents are humongous both songwriting and production -  I think Luke is probably overall happy for his friend, but it would be interesting if Dr L contributed a lot to those 2 songs production wise and didn't really get anything - though I'm sure Max mentioned him in the speech probably

I'm sure Max reached out and thanked guys like Luke and Shellback, or at the very least they reached out to him. The fact is that he appreciates collaboration (evident by him thanking Denniz Pop first and foremost). Max just seems like the guy to be appreciative of his collaborators.

Congratulations! I'm very happy for him.

I would like to see the speech.

Never seen his ascap speeches also.

Would love to see those speeches as well! What I have noticed with the few speeches I have seen is that Max has a sense of humor. However, he also seemed very emotional about the Grammy win. It might be my imagination, I admit, but it seemed to me that he had tears in his eyes.

I love the Enrique clip and Max's shy smile. I like the article from Huffington Post too, thanks Rebekah.

We saw Max's 2011 ASCAP speech before it was pulled. I can't remember exact words but Max thanked Dr Luke for bringing him back from doing nothing, he also thanked ASCAP and said 'he still didn't know where all the cheques are coming from" and he also thanked his wife and daughter. I can't remember what else, I was devastated when the video was deleted.

I just can't believe the the pre-telecast for The Grammy's couldn't of at least been streamed on the internet.

Roy, I don't think it matters exactly how much Max wrote in those songs. For sure, it was the Ariana and Taylor Swift songs that pushed it over and also The Grammy's surely were recognising Max for his whole career. I'm sure Dr Luke or Shellback don't mind.

Interesting, never thought of that! I guess you're right, even though technically it's supposed to be just for that year (for which he definitely did a lot any way) , the people on the
committee are human so they get emotional and maybe they finally realized how ridiculous it would be if he'd never win one, and I suppose they thought like us, "who knows if he ever has a better year than 2014-2015, so let's not miss our opportunity"

Another thought - We all know how he probably has the strongest work ethic out there,  it will be very interesting to see if he slows down a bit after the win, it's only human.
If I was betting money, I'd say he won't and he'll keep working like the animal that he is :-)      I know he already is working on stuff this year, but it will be interesting to see if he slows down a bit finally in 2016, 2017 etc.  He certainly deserves to!!!

Oh my God YES he mentioned Denniz PoP as the very first <3 :) :) :)

but it's a S H A M E that he had to take this price in this poor atmosphere. I understand why he forgot to take it with him because that whole atmosphere is just so disrespectful.

hahaha, he looks so annoyed when he goes to the stage. and that "my first" sounds so arrogant - but in a good way :D like "I know y'all wouldn't believe it but it's my first one indeed".

Thank you saethor! I had looked for a video on the grammy's website, but I wasn't as nearly as observant as you!

Thanks sweetmelody to let me know that it is indeed streamed live.

I loved Max's speech, but it was too short! I wish he would have talked on an on.

It was so rude and disrespectful of so many people not even to bother showing up eg Pharrell, Beyonce etc. All they care about is being famous and on tv.

I feel very strongly that this category should be part of the main show, especially now that producers are more involved in the song's creation than ever before.

Absolutely! It is outrageous that it's stuck at the end of the pre-telecast.

Just seen the broadcast, thanks so much for the instruction how to replay it.

I wish Max would have been able to receive the awards in the main show. "Producer of the year" is such a important category and without these producers the artists would be not where they are now.

It was so good to see Max in video footage. Emotional moment when he thanks Denniz. He must be such a good soul. Proud to be a fan by this incredible genius.

I emailed the GRAMMY association a few months ago to add the Max Martin segment to YouTube

They JUST responded saying they added it last night!
